There ain't nothing like a sex scandal for the panty-sniffers in the punditry, but in the vast scheme of things, might it not be a little more important for the chattering classes to spend some time on this?

Tape: Top CIA official confesses order to forge Iraq-9/11 letter came on White House stationery
John Byrne
Published: Friday August 8, 2008

In damning transcript, ex-CIA official says Cheney likely ordered letter linking Hussein to 9/11 attacks
http://www.ronsuskind.com/thewayoftheworld/transcripts/

A forged letter linking Saddam Hussein to the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks was ordered on White House stationery and probably came from the office of Vice President Dick Cheney, according to a new transcript of a conversation with the Central Intelligence Agency's former Deputy Chief of Clandestine Operations Robert Richer.

The transcript was posted Friday by author Ron Suskind of an interview conducted in June. It comes on the heels of denials by both the White House and Richer of a claim Suskind made in his new book, The Way of The World. The book was leaked to Politico's Mike Allen on Monday, and released Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the White House released a statement on Richer's behalf. In it, Richer declared, "I never received direction from George Tenet or anyone else in my chain of command to fabricate a document ... as outlined in Mr. Suskind's book."

38. No! Impeach John Edwards! He's wreaked as much terrible harm on the country
Edited on Sat Aug-09-08 01:45 PM by KCabotDullesMarxIII
and, indeed, the rest of the world, as Bill Clinton.

It has to be said, I DON'T LOVE ELIZABETH EDWARDS! There! I've said. Neither do I dislike her. BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW HER! All I know about her is what I've read in the papers. And since the MSM's finest are dyed-in-the-wool liars, it means close to zilch.

Of course, as the wife of John Edwards I should be surprised if she were an indifferent kind of person, and in her affliction with cancer, I love her in a certain sense. And, yes, even as the victim of an errant husband in terms of this episode, but I expect it was aberrant behaviour in relation to his normal principles, but in any other circumstance I would not even publicise that!

Feeling sympathy with Elizabeth is not something to shout from the roof-tops. It's just normal human empathy, decency. And it would be no surprise to learn that you have no sympathy for John but, rather, only Pharisaic condemnation. These columns show that that class is alive and well, and living in political circles in the US. It would obviously surprise you to learn that you, yourself, have probably committed sins at least as bad. If you consider yourself a Christian, then you have done so, and indeed, worse. "Those who judge without mercy, will receive no mercy." That is one of the fulcrums of the Christian faith.

9. Keith Olbermann just suggested Congress come back in to session and
impeach at least the vice president.

It was like music to my ears. The perfect scenario. And on tv, no less.

Suskind's book just seems like the catalyst that will move us over the hump. It feels like we're there. It's just far too serious to ignore.

12. This has to be the straw that broke the camel's back
If this is in fact true and can be proved beyond any and all the denials that are sure to come from this admin, this should throw such an awful light on this conniving, decietful, underhanded piss poor excuse for an executive that Americans by and large should feel rightfully outraged for being betrayed and lied to about something as consequential as death and war and yet the most talked about story is an ex-candidate's affair. I feel like the world is upside down sometimes.

13. Sorry. There is too much left out of the excerpts from the interview
to be sure what they are talking about. It may be clear to us who are willing to believe that the CIA forged a letter and that the instructions to forge it came from the White House, but the omitted portions of the conversation make the whole conversation kind of unclear. To what extent was Suskind "leading" his interviewee, to paraphrase the term "leading the witness." How did the conversation arrive at this topic? Who first suggested that a letter was forged, for example?

21. If you actually read the transcript, you'll see one thing is perfectly clear: the White House order
The rest is rather extraneous. Suskind wasn't "leading the witness". You can't deny the central fact that a tasking order on White House stationery ordering the forgery ended up in George Tenet's hand and it was then passed to Richer and five or six others at CIA.

Richer indicates he assumed it was Cheney's office who issued the order. It was someone very high at the White House, and was treated as a presidential order by the CIA.

It doesn't matter whether some CIA technician or one on Doug Feith's staff actually forged the letter. Richer's testimony is certainly more than enough to convene a Grand Jury to fully investigate this grave crime.

Appoint a federal prosecutor. Do it now, or do it after January. But, do it.

Cheney or Feith are not in his chain of command. Tenet is.

But, he doesn't deny doing it. Or that it happened.

Edited on Sat Aug-09-08 09:32 AM by defendandprotect
-- and even with George Tenet's help in applying that pressure to CIA analysts ---

most of them wouldn't lie for Cheney or for the sake of his wanting to attack Iraq.

They stood by the truth of the intelligence they had collected.

-- the bad news is that Cheney was still able to get this done -- with Tenet's help.

Truth be told, I don't think Pelosi is calling Congress back into session . . .

I don't think there will be an impeachment before the election.

Nor even what would be very appropriate hearings and investigation of these issues.

Our system is so corrupted now by fascists that we almost have to hope to get lucky

and have this Bush/Cheney house of cards fall down on its own . . . cause Pelosi isn't

going to give it a push!

29. There is some conflict in the reporting...one source says Feith's group
did the forgery, but the agent says the CIA did it. Obviously the forgery was solicited and accomplished, but the Congress needs to nail down why the stories differ, so the guilty do not get away with their crimes. I think Suskind is a great American; he refused to protect his sources when national crimes were committed. Cheney and Bush and Feith all need to go down.

We're talking about IMPORTANT things-- KO was awesome last night.

Here's the thing we have got to get people to sign Kucinich's impeachment call. The more we get on there, the more pressure we can bring to bear.

Now why did Kas get 650k sigs for Fox being racists (one of them mine) and Kucinich only got 100k something for impeachment (yes one of them mine:-))?
We can do better than that.

Can anyone send this link to ONE MORE PERSON

Yet, they keep doing the same thing day in and day out regardless of the impact. I know she is merely collecting her paycheck. Meredith's not comfortable because she really is not qualified. As an over paid spokesperson and a scripted interviewer/reporter, she caves in daily to corporate influence. It is sad actually, because I don't think she's a horrible person. Misguided, maybe?

whatever it takes to get them out at this point, the damage is too great and it's way past time for corrective action except for discarding the invasive spoil that has been running everything down notably for these last eight years, congress won't take corrective action (anthrax) and the few that take a stand MSM takes care of that, so from my standpoint, get the rot out, be on guard it doesn't happen again, and get on with a rational society that can heal, and further our existence in a humane way.
