Our family has been through a lot. Some caused by nature, some caused by human weakness, and some – most recently – caused by the desire for sensationalism and profit without any regard for the human consequences. Although John believes he should stand alone and take the consequences of his action now, when the door closes behind him, he has his family waiting for him.

John made a terrible mistake in 2006. The fact that it is a mistake that many others have made before him did not make it any easier for me to hear when he told me what he had done. But he did tell me. And we began a long and painful process in 2006, a process oddly made somewhat easier with my diagnosis in March of 2007. This was our private matter, and I frankly wanted it to be private because as painful as it was I did not want to have to play it out on a public stage as well. Because of a recent string of hurtful and absurd lies in a tabloid publication, because of a picture falsely suggesting that John was spending time with a child it wrongly alleged he had fathered outside our marriage, our private matter could no longer be wholly private.

The pain of the long journey since 2006 was about to be renewed.

John has spoken in a long on-camera interview I hope you watch. Admitting one’s mistakes is a hard thing for anyone to do, and I am proud of the courage John showed by his honesty in the face of shame. The toll on our family of news helicopters over our house and reporters in our driveway is yet unknown. But now the truth is out, and the repair work that began in 2006 will continue. I ask that the public, who expressed concern about the harm John’s conduct has done to us, think also about the real harm that the present voyeurism does and give me and my family the privacy we need at this time.

I think most U.S. marriages are touched by affairs from one partner or another, at one time or another, which makes the faux public outrage so annoying. As if political figures are supposed to be super-human perfect beings, above having any sexuality. My hope is that the love that has sustained the marriage so far will triumph, because it certianly seems as though they are devoted to each other. Sharing sex is not the same as sharing a lifetime together, especially when this couple has already survived so much. So again, I appreciate both the Edwards and pray they are able to work through this public revelation of a very private situation.

After all, my skirts are hardly clean as a human and a man, and I have just seen and experienced too much to go judging two people and their situation when my only known details are those from the MSM.

But this, I can say:

Elizabeth, back in 2004, after the election, you did something that still gives me chills: you came here and lent us some of your considerable strength and dignity, at a time that so many of us were feeling eviscerated. You extended a hand of kindness, compassion and deep consideration at a time when many of us, myself included, were nothing more than shambling wrecks, traumatized and groping for a life preserver. You extended, in a strong and dignified hand, a life preserver that many of us grasped and remain so deeply thankful for. You touched hearts in a way that defies measure.

You face so much these days, so many challenges in your life now. They'll get around to it somewhere buried down in the newscast away from the top because there'll just be OTHER SHIT to cover. And mcsame will get more shrill again and they'll be talking about that. There simply will just not be enough time. The small but noisy percentage of fanatics and fringies will follow it to the ends of the earth, especially since it's all they've got. They have nothing on Obama. Certainly nothing like this (ARE YOU LISTENING, BARACK? STAY ZIPPED, DAMMIT!!!!!). It's all the dirt they've got. So they'll cling to this as a drowning person clings to a broken board.

I remember after the 2004 election I was dismayed and I read Elizabeth's post, hear on DU, that quoted Thomas Jefferson after the passage of the Sedition Act. It gave me hope and inspiration.

I then sent that quote to a very highly regarded best selling fantasy author, George RR Martin. He had written on his blog that he was upset over the result of the 2004 election and was unable to complete his next book. He actually emailed me back thanking me and posted the same quote on his blog. It was great thrill to read it, knowing I had emailed it to him.

very thrilled. So today I would like to say that I know you have had more than your share of grief and I'm so very sorry for what you may have endured. But I also feel that you of all people would NEVER want others to crucify John for his transgression. I will not be one who will jump on any band wagon to denigrate your husband. Most people think Jesus was talking about 490 DIFFERENT sins. But I believe He was also talking about forgiving ONE sin 490 times. I never had to forgive any tresspass against me anywhere near that many times, but I have had to "re-do" my forgiveness a lot and I am sure for the ones who love me they have had to revisit my sins against them at least as many times. So forgiveness is a process, as you are finding. But it is also one of the greatest journeys you will make in my opinion.

Keep working with one another on that journey. I know you are best friends and marriage is about being friends as well as lovers. You will do well if you can master forgiveness, which is one of the most difficult lessons anyone can learn and many fail, I have at times! But when I fail I know I just have to get up and try it again until I succeed.

It is humbling to forgive but it is even more humbling to be forgiven. Now go out there and love some more!
