1. He says the kid's not his.
The argument in favor of that, absent paternity testing, would be that if it is his he'd be better off saying so now instead of having it come out later and reignite the story.

79. The issue is damage control, though.
As long as he's admitting to the affair, if the kid is his, he'd be best off saying that right away, and letting the whole thing burn off all at once.

Not saying that's bulletproof, or that he'd necessarily listen, but there's that argument.

3. Ahem
as a matter of fact it is.

And I have no sarcasm.

You and me both know that if it was Romney or Huckabee we would be chortling and having a grand old time with the news.

All I ask is a consistent reaction to this type of news.

If it is to be left alone as a private matter between the parties involved then so be it.

But that should hold true for both political parties.

If it only holds true for us Democrats, then I have a personal problem with that stance.

And I believe in the long run it does damage to our party.

Remember some day when we are in power we will be confronted with serious wrong doing by one or more of our own (that is simply human nature) and since we raised such holy hell about GOP abuses of power (legitimately) we had better damm well be ready to act in a consistent manner when one of our own crosses the legal/ethical line.

This is all I am trying to say.

It needs to be consistent, not oh it's okay because our guy did it, but if the other guy does it nail him to the wall with out mercy.

Think about it.

Thank you for letting me reply.

13. You trivialize a situation that could have meant the end of the world.
That is if he had been our nominee and the pukes won. He lied to the American people.
Not a way to gain the confidence of the voters.

You may not care about affairs. They do hurt the families and often cause families to split apart.
Often it is the children who suffer the most. Your callousness is noted.

28. of course it's between him and his wife....
I couldn't agree more that it's none of our business--we do know about it now, therefore many of us have an opinion on it, but in a perfect world you'd be right in saying that it ought to be between him and his wife.

But if he'd been the nominee, or the VP pick, this news could have been disastrous for all of us. For the world, even. Of course he didn't want it to become public knowledge. And of course it shouldn't have been. But that's what happens in politics... people look at politicians' personal lives. He was dumb to think this wouldn't become known. And he was irresponsible and selfish to run anyway and to take a chance on destroying the chances of getting a Democrat into the White House. He was irresponsible and selfish to have an affair, too. I disagree with your statement that "there is nothing wrong with that." It is wrong to deliberately choose a course of action that will hurt a fellow human being to the core, particularly when the reasons for the behavior are purely selfish.

(I'm not a prude... if they had an open marriage, that'd be one thing. But I doubt that they do--that'd be SUPER dumb for a politician.)

I understand your point about this being between him and his wife, but I still think he did wrong, in many ways.

He lied multiple times when directly asked during his campaign.
You are in the dark.

And there is there is plenty wrong with people betraying trusts they have
made with lovers and loved ones. Talk to kids whose parent cheated.
It hurts a lot.

You can't use campaign funds to advance your sex life.

But, the larger point is: THe fact that a law is broken or not broken is a terrible way to run society or judge morality. It is not illegal to loudly fart during a funeral. But it sure is in bad taste and the person who voluntarily does so should not be applauded.

Likewise, assuming Edwards is telling the truth - now -

he visited an ex-lover at a hotel in the middle of the night while his wife is at home dying of cancer.

Are you OK with that? Or do you find that distasteful?

Now that the crackerjack team Bush has solved the Anthrax case, maybe they can find out

Who put the bomp in the bomp-a-bomp-a-bomp
Who put the ram in the ram-a-lam-a-ding-dong
Who put the bop in the bop-she-bop-she-bop
Who put the dip in the dip-de-dip-de-dip

Maybe the answer is John Edwards!!!

Another mystery solved by the Scooby gang.

67. Straw man
A straw man argument is an informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position. To "set up a straw man" or "set up a straw man argument" is to describe a position that superficially resembles an opponent's actual view but is easier to refute, then attribute that position to the opponent (for example, deliberately overstating the opponent's position). A straw man argument can be a successful rhetorical technique (that is, it may succeed in persuading people) but it carries little or no real evidential weight, because the opponent's actual argument has not been refuted.

Perhaps turning off the computer and rejoining the real world for awhile would not only decrease your interest in the personal lives of people online, but improve your abilities to debate the merits of actual issues. Why is his (and therefore MY) marital status any of your business?

:wtf:
