I have a theory about the Edwards tabloid story
I don't think the neocons are worried about Edwards as a potential VP choice. I think they're much more concerned about him being Attorney General. The GOP is chockfull of criminals right now and a bulldog like Edwards would be their worst nightmare. Especially if your name starts with Che and ends with Ney.

As far as the photos go, I don't think either one is him. The sharper of the two looks like someone who has run a marathon. There is a yellow or white line on asphalt behind him. Is Edwards a runner and are there any photos of him running? I can only find photos of him with button down shirts and slacks. Nothing casual. And where's the $400 haircut that the neocons fell in love with? Ok, maybe if he just got finished running it would be messed up, but you know damn well that before he went to a hospital (or any public place, for that matter) he would have showered and changed. And what hospital in America is going to let someone come into a hospital covered in sweat and hold a new born baby without having them put on scrubs. I definitely think the photo is bullshit.

Maybe we need to start combing the "internets" for photos of Edwards and see if we can come up with anything remotely resembling the sharper photo. My guess is you can't.

1. I don't think the neocons are worried about JE at all
and there is zilch evidence that they're behind this crap. I agree the photos look nothing like JE and prove nothing.

4. Re Subject line: Why?
... this is not an assault, just asking because I want to know.

5. Generally, I think the system is safe for the neocons
no matter who's president or who's AG. And I think they're enormously arrogant. They believe they're untouchable- in this country. And as I said, there's no evidence to support that the NE story is something ginned up by the neocons.

9. Views similar to those of my younger, well educated, more radical Family members and their friends.
I understand, but hold hope for . . . something . . . ?

2. He is a runner
This is a link to an interview with Runner's World

I do agree with your theory. John Edwards would be more of a threat as AG.

I don't think that's him in the photo. I would be disappointed if this story were true but I would still support him.

6. I doubt Edwards is/was ever a contender for the VP slot.
When you don't even win your own state, you're not really much of an asset to the ticket.

He may get a position in the next administration, but not VP.

7. I think you are right. They definitly do not want him for AG nor does Wall Street or
big business in general.

11. Here's a link to the National Enquirer cover

The fact that it's the National Enquirer also leads me to doubt its credibility.

13. thanks
You would think they could do better than one blurry picture of someone who could be anyone. I think that if they are going to ruin someone's life, they should at least have solid proof. They are reckless with their accusations.

I hope, for the sake of Elizabeth and the children, that this is BS.

10. What gets me is why should it matter?
He's not divorced, as was Reagan and McLame. It's none of anyone's business.

Oh, yeah, this is America. A man's sex life matters more than anything. :sarcasm:

It's disturbing beyond words, on so many levels.

(Assuming it's true)

20. Every day it becomes more apparent..
that it isn't the government that is the problem, it is the American people. The idea that I should be concerned that John Edwards..or anyone else.."might" have had an affair is so sophomoric it is beyond words.

22. There's Significant Evidence Here
This is not a court of law, where "beyond a reasonable doubt" prevails. When selecting our political representatives "looks like he did it" is the standard.

If he did cheat on his terminally ill wife - or even if there's simply a significant chance - then he's toast.

18. It seems to me that the National Enquirer has a history of attacking Dems
much more that the GOP. My bet is you won't find anything about David Vitter or Ted Stevens or Jack Abramhoff or any of the other sleazebags that make up the GOP. But you will see stuff about Bill and Hillary, Obama, Edwards, Kerry, and on and on.

I'll bet if we checked Opensecrets we'd see that the owners of the National Enquirer donate quite a bit of money to the GOP.

As soon as I noticed them talking about this story on their blogs, they commented that this blew his chances for VP and AG.

17. I think you hit it on the head. They so fear an AG who knows their stuff and is willing
to work on it. It is standard Rovian tactics to kill the candidate in such a way.

They would fear a Janet Reno AG as well (though that's, alas, not a possibility I believe)
