Tires have become insanely expensive
I wound up failing my NC inspection a couple of days ago on account of my tires. I figured no huge deal, I wasn't thrilled but for maybe 250 bucks or so I would have 4 new tires and that would be that. Now, I have a Focus, not some huge vehicle. It took a bunch of searching and looking at lowest prices and I finally have found 4 that will cost me about 280. Just two years ago, I got them for 50 bucks a tire.

1. You realize of course that what's insane is relying on something so scarce for life's necessities

If we're so smart why didn't we think of a way of organizing a society that didn't require a resource that we're running out of.

2. No offense, this is peanuts, chicken feed, a 12% increase.

The last time you got tires, oil was maybe 1/3 of what it is now.

4. depends. If the old tires were good for 75000 miles and in order to get in the $$
range desired the OP had to settle for 40,000 mile tires then it is more than 12%

I just experienced the same thing.

7. I have generally found tire warraties to be bullshit.
But knock yourself out.

And if the price for equivalent tires is up 12%, then it's up 12%. If you are not talking equivalent tires, you are not talking about what I was talking about (obviously.)

11. I have always had my tire warranties honored and they have been well worth my while
tires which are designed for longer mileage cost more than tires of the same size which are designed for a shorter life span.

I was questioning if 12% was the right ratio considering the OP ended up taking shorter life tires.

8. It was 60k to 40k
but yeah that kind of thing. I didn't mention it in the OP though, to be fair.

3. A good set (2) of bicycle tires cost me $120 recently.

And I only get a few thousand miles on the back tire. :(

5. it's not that, but the dollar is weaker than ever. Everyone has to charge more US $ to keep up
with the rest of the world.

Your tire company probably has dealings with other countries and has had to adjust US prices to keep up. I too just paid nearly 300$ for a set of tires for my Corolla.

$3.71 with tax. I couldn't believe it.

They can bite me if they think I will be back.

10. I went to the grocery store yesterday and the same 10lb bag
of potatoes that was $2.79 is now $4.77. And the other variety next to it was $7.99!
