I don't feel welcome here
I've been around here for years and it just never stops. Virtually every foul Republican is referred to as "gay". It happens over and over. It's against the rules and the mods do try, but it never ends. Why?

They say that doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result is the definition of insanity so I don't know why I keep expecting it to change.

I don't know what to do, but I don't like how DU makes me feel.

Those links left me more confused than before. I didn't see anything in any of them where there was a specific issue of Republicans being labeled as homosexual in a derogatory way. I did, however, see a lot of discussion about closet cases where legislation was concerned, most of those opposed to gay marriage, for example, being theoretical closet cases.

Thanks for the trouble you took to get me those links, but they do nothing to support the original post.

Maybe I just don't spend enough time on DU. I'm happy to keep it that way if this is the kind of nonsense that gets people worked up.

Again, thanks.

11. Yes, and I'm not alone in wincing when they're
referred to as female body parts.

That tells me more about the juvenile nature of the poster, though, than it does about his target.

I try to have a thick skin. I've seen more than one discussion group destroyed by language police.

I do alert on things I find very offensive, maybe once a month. Most of the time I just realize I don't have a divine right to go through life unoffended and soldier on.

105. I try not to do that. If I reduce someone to a body part
it's one we all share.

However, not being male, I don't tend to wince when a man is referred to as a male body part. I do wince when anyone of either sex is referred to as a female body part.

Perhaps it's all those millennia of patriarchs considering everything to do with women as soiled and obscene.

There have been so many Puke Anti-Gay crusaders who turn out to be sexually harassing their 18 year old male interns. There's nothing wrong with being gay or liking ice cream. But there is something very wrong with trying to outlaw gay porn and ice cream when you're eating hagendaaz and surfing gay porn sites.

Sorry for pushing your button, but dammit you made it so easy! Seriously, you're not the first person to be offended or hurt by common figures of speech in use here-- for example, we've had extensive threads about language that's disrespectful of women and other groups.

My advice is to remember that unless you're the actual target of someone's disrespect, it helps to have a skin thick enough to protect your own blood pressure from unnecessary stress. Mostly it's not intended to be insulting, even when it inadvertently is.

Edited on Mon Aug-04-08 05:35 PM by sam sarrha
that Lincoln had Syphlis... from a homosexual relationship with his first law partner.. :wow:

http://www.poxhistory.com/work10.htm
snip"...About the year 1836-37 Lincoln moved to Springfield and took up quarters with Speed; they became very intimate...."snip

i just finished reading the book 'POX', most amazing book i have read, from an cultural anthropological view point. if it hadn't been for syphilis we might be living in a StarTreck world now.. ..cheap at amazon.com

it just somehow destroys their Homophobic stand while so many are hypocrites, their founder was gay and they pathologically hate gays so much.. i do tend to poke hypocrites with a sharp stick any chance i get, but i do not intend to project any disrespect to the gay community in general.

this isn't a perfect world.. full of perfect people, make it better at least with your voice, your absence will help no one here.
if you do go, write if you find Utopia

this is the best forum i have run into, with the most tollerant, for the most part, people on a mission to protect freedom and share information and seek truth.. you do know about the magic button that makes anoying people go away..?

I've seen several threads in the last couple days alone with tittering over crap like bush and lieberman being gay lovers, and so on.

It is persistent, so much so that it's hard to alert on all of it - but it does have its roots in homophobia.

54. "Gay"
Is a very popular hetero insult. As in "That's so gay".

About as intelligent as "That's hot"

I'm sorry you have to go through this, it's got to be frustrating, and the sad thing is, it's really unnecessary.

I can insult republicans without using lame ass sexuality/gender insults that rely on the legally, physically spiritually and emotionally threatened.

Isn't one of the goals of a progressive community to bring our oppressed brothers and sisters along with positive change, helping rather than hindering, or pretending words don't cause damage?

Even people who consider themselves gay-friendly progressives can't seem to stop themselves from equating "gay" with "bad." Thank you for raising this issue again--people can't learn if no one will teach them. You're teaching them. Good for you.

69. Sorry you were offended. We all have at least three choices when that happens.
1) Confront the evil-DUer (who likely as not is a troll -- we seem to be infected with that vermin these days, on each and every thread.)

2) Ignore them -- permanently. There's nothing more satisfying than posting "I can't hear you!!" to a numb-nuts on your ignore list.

3) Alert the mods. If the numb-nut has made a habit of boorish behavior, the mods may send them to their well-deserved grave.

There's a fourth option. Send the offender a PM and tell them how you feel about their boorish behavior. If they respond in a very negative way to you, forward their response to the mods.

'Nuff said. Unfortunately, this kind of behavior happens everywhere in this society -- another outgrowth of the frat-boy manners modeled by our faux-(p)Resident. My guess is that once we rid ourselves of that scum, our society will begin evolving again.

Sure hope so.

114. Believe me, sending an "alert" on an asshole is the kinder, gentler way to respond.
There have been a few ass-hats here whose faces I wanted to rearrange. There still are. When they break the DU rules, an "alert" is the most humane thing I can do for all of us.

It also saves space for people who value DU and respect its purpose.

Glad I don't know how to use the "sarcasm" thingy. Means I have to say what I mean and mean what I say. Try it. You'll like it.

You can't deny that there ARE self-loathing gay Republicans such as Larry Craig, Gannon/Guckert or Ted Haggard.

But to extend that metaphor to ALL gay-hating Republicans is WRONG.

Some ARE verifiably heterosexual vicious haters of teh gay.

They're out there. And they can't be written off as deep-closeted gays.

80. Well, I for one am glad you're here!
Not sure what to say beyond that. I'm gay too and I notice homophobic quips now and then but I don't see it as the general rule. I hang out in a lot of forums and, all in all, I think DU is far more mature in its awareness of homophobia than most. To me it is largely a 'culture or origin', maturity issue and a self-awareness issue. We know we live in a homophobic culture. No getting around that. The good thing about forums is that all kinds of people can post. That is also the bad thing about them. Unless you've interacted with a particular poster for quite some time (or they tell you), you don't know much about the person beyond the words they've written. Age, gender, race, background -- you just don't know. Adolescents or people with a social maturity level not far beyond it often make a lot of gay slurs or snarky comments completely unaware of what they are doing -- not to mention whatever else might be going on in them regarding their own sexuality.

Anyway, like I said, I don't really know what to say. At least here you can confront a person if you're of a mind to and if that doesn't prove satisfying you can always put them on ignore. In real life you can see who is saying something and make a more informed decision about whether it is worth the effort to confront them. Here, you just never know.

85. Once you become sensitized to stupid and ignorant language it is almost impossible to ignore it.
And if you are not sensitized to that particular language it's hard to even notice it.

A phrase which virtually everyone uses that drives me right up the wall is "alcohol and drugs". Alcohol *is* a drug and the phrase is, I think, consciously designed to keep people from realizing that fact.

Thanks to your particular life experiences you are sensitized to language which uses "gay" as an insult, you will notice it when it will fly right over the head of someone who has not lived what you have.

I'm not gay so I'm not particularly sensitized to the pejorative use of "gay" the way you are. I am, however, an old DFH and PDA (poly drug abuser) and the use of the term "what are you smoking" to imply someone said something stupid is offensive to me since it is a slur against those of us who prefer recreational chemicals other than alcohol.

Most people use language without really thinking about the real meaning of what they are saying, those of us who are sensitized to certain idiotic turns of phrase just have to grin and bear it because people aren't going to stop using those phrases.

87. I do NOT refer to every rethugnican as "gay"
And, y'know, if any Rethugnican admitted to being gay (without attacking other gays or claiming a special exemption because he was "saved", I would support him on that issue.

Really. You may choose not to believe me, but that is how I would act.

Now the Rethugnicans who are gay but who deny it are a different matter. They're fair game because they're liars. not because they're gay.

As for the Rethugnicans who are gay but pass legislation against gays, all I can suggest is this. First we use a cheese grater to remove their skin. Then we roll them in salt. Then we wash the salt off with vinegar. And then we really fucking hurt them.

But we live in an imperfect world. One where my perfectly reasonable suggestions for flaying those Republicans will never happen (but really, that's for the best, because I could never justify treating somebody like that, even somebody as evil as Cheney).

It's an imperfect world we live in. Most people these days realize that the N word is no longer acceptable in polite company. But there are still some people here who, without meaning harm, confuse the issues surrounding those who are gay with those who are pederasts (I will go way out on a limb here and say that paedophilia is something I could hold my nose and tolerate but pederasty is not).

Sorry dude, but none of us are perfect. But over on this side of the aisle we (mostly) try to improve ourselves when somebody points out our errors, and you won't find that on the other side of the aisle.

And no, that wasn't intended as "we're the best you have so accept us warts and all" but as "we know we still have some warts, so tell us where they are so we can get rid of them."

... and the mods can't be everywhere at once. They do count on us to let them know things. I used to think hitting Alert was like playground tattling, but then I read that the mods actually appreciate the heads-up -- strangely enough, when I check back on the offender's status I often see a tombstone where their info was.

Best of luck in avoidance of the toxic.

109. You know how there are people who are socially
challenged?

They don't know how to act out in public ... they say things that everyone else in the group wouldn't dare say?

They show up at dinner without bringing something like a bottle of wine, because the host said not to bring anything. When everyone knows you bring something anyway.

I think a lot of the offenders at DU are like this. It's not really malicious as much as their minds just don't get it.

How anyone can think gay people aren't horribly embarrassed to read about Democrats or Republicans getting busted for bathroom sex is beyond me.

And yet they seem to try to justify it with the hypocrisy excuse.

Oh, look at the hypocritical Republicans.

Apparently pointing out something that is out of the hands of all of us as Democrats is more important than the feelings of gay DUers.

It's quite sad.
