I wish Walt Starr would come back
Edited on Thu Mar-08-07 08:46 PM by Horse with no Name
I always enjoyed reading his stuff.
I hope he is doing well. The Democrats are finally making progress.
Please come back if you are lurking around Walt.

Here is a link to one of his old posts where in December, he called a change of 60 Congress members.
How prophetic was that considering how things were at that time?

4. He was upset that the Democrats weren't doing anything
as many of us were at the time.
It's been a good week to be a Democrat.
Just hope Walt is feeling it too.

deleted posts in GDPOlitics when I searched....

So, yes... Water under the bridge... Come on back Walt and celebrate with us some small, but very significant steps in taking back our country!

Seems so unfortunate that the emotions that come with a short period of passionate debate can get so out of control that we lose a good DUer...

26. She added a great deal to conversations... information,
arguments and counter arguments - and was often willing to discuss differences - and those discussions -when reading them - were packed full of great information. When we first really starting crossing paths on threads we began to laugh about that it was almost like having coffee and reading the newspaper together. I miss her on the boards tremendously. But I am lucky - don't have to miss her as a person - we are still in touch. I will never forget how hard it was to 'watch' the Wellstone funeral - alone (in real time) and ending up on the phone and processing it in real time. I hope that many DUers find kindred souls and long lasting friendships that start with periodic cross posting on threads and find an intellectual connection that leads to real time friendships. I am sorta distant per forming on-line friendships (long time of posting interactions first - I don't do many pms - just my style) - but when they do form - they can be very meaningful.

There are many other DUers that I miss - and got an "on line" sense of who they were/are and appreciated them and their contributions. But NSMA - she became a real friend - and while I think her break from DU was healthy for her - I personally miss her on line - per what she brought to discussions - even though I am fortunate enough not to "miss her" entirely (per the friendship already formed and thus continued off of DU.)

41. I miss Teena
more than anyone else. I still think the world of her. Come BACK!!

Walt... well, Walt's a nice enough guy. But what a headcase, with his daily epiphanies and declarations of unassailable fidelity to whatever stance he fancied at the moment. He'd be a Green on Monday, would pounce on your neck as a diehard DLCer on Wednesday, and become a serene Wellstone Democrat by Friday.

42. yep - that sorta covers it...
and with each position - there was great passion. I liked him - but it was easier when the board was small - to get a sense for the person behind the nick and grow to appreciate the quirks (and that was one of his) - today - much harder to get that same sense as the DU pop is so much larger.

And I agree about the hole left by Teena's absence. She really left a positive intellectual mark on this place.

It was suicide. He asked for it. Which frankly, the way I feel about the Democrats some of the time I can totally relate. Nobody pays attention to me but I've followed every drama for over 2 years in GD.

Once a quarter we get to vote on what banned member we are willing to reinstate - to give folks a second chance. I liked some of what Walt and oldleftylawyer had to say; ignored the rest.

37. Ah, If he came back, he'd just ask to be banned again twelve minutes later.
Dude could never make up his mind about anything. He changed his convictions like some change their boxer briefs; on Mondays, he was ultra-liberal, Tuesdays, a centrist, Wednesdays he'd tell everyone to give up and commit mass suicide, Thursdays he'd be Mr. Hopeful, and on Fridays there'd be an argument with himsel(ves)f.

44. mopaul is my most missed
OLL, NSMA, Walt - miss all of them. Wish we had the option of "time-outs" instead of tombstones during temporary but fierce controversies.

I completely understood the depths of Walt's despair over the stupidity of the Dems in refusing to filibuster Alito. I am still in just as deep despair because we will have to live with impacts of the "unitary executive" asshole's rulings for decades.

47. Also TruthIsAll
who originally inspired me to join this board when he had a question on probability math in Excel.

I think your "time-out" suggestion is a good idea, for established posters as opposed to true disruptors or trolls. Say three months loss of posting privileges, but in a discrete way: no tombstone and no disappearing avatar, so nobody would know except for the mods and the transgressor.
