8 years ago today: Bush pledged to ‘uphold the honor and dignity of the office.’»

Eight years ago today, President Bush delivered his acceptance speech at the 2000 Republican National Convention. John Perr notes this pledge from Bush:

So when I put my hand on the Bible, I will swear to not only uphold the laws of our land, I will swear to uphold the honor and dignity of the office to which I have been elected, so help me God.

In the speech, Bush also said, “A generation shaped by Vietnam must remember the lessons of Vietnam: When America uses force in the world, the cause must be just, the goal must be clear, and the victory must be overwhelming.” (The picture ... is of Bush shaking hands with McCain at the conclusion of the 2000 RNC Convention.)

7. Bushie's expectations of ethical conduct by executive branch employees...
A fraud and pathological liar from birth, he apparently decided to begin his non-stop campaign of global destruction with a little satirical humor. So, on his first day in office, he had a little heart-to-heart with his crony regulators and corporate plants selected solely for their commitment to provide no oversight at all.

Although all present spent much of the time rolling on the floor in uncontrollable spasms of giggling, tears of laughter rolling down their cheeks, Bushie laid down the law on ethical behavior:

January 20, 2001

MEMORANDUM FOR THE HEADS OF EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENTS AND AGENCIES

SUBJECT: Standards of Official Conduct

Everyone who enters into public service for the United States has a duty to the American people to maintain the highest standards of integrity in Government. I ask you to ensure that all personnel within your departments and agencies are familiar with, and faithfully observe, applicable ethics laws and regulations, including the following general principles from the Standards of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch:

(1) Public service is a public trust, requiring employees to place loyalty to the Constitution, the laws, and ethical principles above private gain.

(2) Employees shall not hold financial interests that conflict with the conscientious performance of duty.

(3) Employees shall not engage in financial transactions using nonpublic Government information or allow the improper use of such information to further any private interest.
