Hard times good for the 'sole'.....Shoe repair biz perks up in recession
from WVEC:

Repairs are the 'sole' of Norfolk shoe business

03:10 PM EDT on Friday, August 1, 2008

Reported by: Vanessa Coria

NORFOLK – It’s a busy time in the shoe repair business.

"Traditionally, the repair business gets a little better as the economy gets a little worse," says cobbler Jeff Evans.

He’s extending the life of worn down shoes and clothing at Hall’s Shoe Repair in Ghent.

"Summertime, typically, is our time to catch our breath. We normally have about a two-month window when schools are out and people are on vacation or in sandals that we can relax. This summer, we're blessed. It has not slowed down.

Evans says business is up 11 percent from this time last year.

There’s a wall of brown bags with orange tags waiting for pickup

It’s a family business, so the upswing is good news for the Evans. ......(more)

1. Too bad that so many of the shoes these days are constructed
in such a way that the sole can't BE replaced. I used to get this done regularly (20-30 yrs ago) but now it can't be done.

Men's shoes are probably better in this respect. Women's shoes are useless decorations.
