Traditional Values Coalition smears Harvey Milk
From the "Oh no, they just messed up real bad" department:

"What significant contribution did Harvey Milk bring to the state of California – other than encouraging gay people to come out of the closet?" asked Benjamin Lopez of the Traditional Values Coalition.

The rookie lawmaker sponsored and passed a local gay rights initiative. He also helped defeat a 1978 ballot initiative to ban gays and lesbians from teaching in California public schools."

"Wake up, America. … No more racism, no more sexism, no more ageism, no more hatred. … No more!"
- Harvey Milk

1. Alice Kessler has it right
Alice Kessler of Equality California, a gay-rights advocacy group, said Milk is a symbol of civil rights activism

By framing it, correctly, as a civil rights issue, the religious extremists will look bad.

2. That's not all.
He got people to work together with gays who had been suspicious of gays, and who had never spent any time around them. They came to love and respect Harvey and other members of the gay community.

Anyone who can create respect and understanding between diverse communities has accomplished a great deal.

4. We still are feeling the affects of his loss.
He accomplished so much in so little time.

I often wonder what more he might have accomplished had he not been murdered.

He was a great man, indeed. He will be remembered long after Benny Lopez is gone and forgotten.

7. Would you guys please help me put this up at the top?
There was nothing "rookie" about Harvey Milk. He f#cking transformed this city and started a revolution.

"Rookie", my @ss. He changed the way the people in this city were represented at City Hall. We will always owe him bigtime, gay and straight.
