Bush: 'Life after the White House'
'Hopefully, I will contribute to mankind in postive ways,' the president says
Posted August 1, 2008 12:30 PM
The Swamp

by Mark Silva

As his term nears an end, President Bush continually faces the legacy question. He answered it rather bluntly in an interview conducted on the eve of his final tour of East Asia coming next week.

"What is going to be your legacy?'' asked Suthichai Sae-Yoon, of the Nation Multimedia Group in Thailand, sitting with the president in the Map Room of the White House.

"Oh, I don't know,'' Bush replied. "'ll be dead when they finally figure it out.''

But how would he like history to remember him?

"Somebody who took on tough challenges and didn't shy away from doing what he thought was right,'' the president said in the interview this week. "And, you know, look, I'm a big believer in freedom and liberty. That's been a hallmark of my agenda.

"But... there's no such thing as short-term history, so I am very confident in telling you that I'll be long gone before somebody finally figures out the true merit and meaning of the Bush administration.''

"Is there life after the White House?'' Bush was asked near the eve of a trip that will carry him to China for the opening of the Olympic Games, to South Korea and to Thailand.

"Absolutely. I'm only 62 years old,'' Bush said.

"You know, I'm going to write, I'm going to share my experiences,'' the president said, noting the presidential library that will be built at his wife's alma mater in Texas, in the city where Laura Bush is scouting for a retirement home. "I'm going to build a policy center and library at Southern Methodist University in Dallas...

"Hopefully, I will contribute to mankind in positive ways,'' Bush said. "I haven't really had time to think about it because when you're the president of the United States you got a lot to think about day by day. But I'm looking forward to finishing strong and then I'm going home to Texas. That's where I was raised, that's where I'm from, and that's where I'm going to retire.''

you'll spend the rest of your sorry life rotting away in the Hague. That would be the best thing you could do for humanity.

Could he possibly mean he's going to learn to write?

He should learn to read first.

21. 'Hopefully I will contribute to mankind in positive ways...'
I can imagine cats barking and dogs growing fins. I can imagine travelling to America on a flying unicorn. I can imagine the entire world turning purple. I can imagine the moon turning into a giant petunia. But Bush contributing to mankind in positive ways? - that is beyond even the power of imagination!
