Why did the Justice Dept go after Stevens
I know he is a crook, but isn't he one of theirs? I thought they only went after dems.

1. Dedicated careerists hired under Civil Service.
Which is why Monica Goodling broke the law when she included blatantly political questions in interviews.

3. She only did that by accident
maybe 50 times or more.

4. Timely, eh? He was trailing Begich (D) in the polls...
As long as they take him out of the race it will be Begich vs. Palin for the seat...

7. I hate to say it but
just like in louisiana where politics are corrupt but the people still vote them in... same will happen in alaska. there is a backlash against the justice dept and poor uncle ted is the victim.
this was bad for begich.

8. I can't see it happening, this time.
Who are they going to vote for? Stevens, Palin?

Stevens is absolutely BUGGERED, as he should be.

Palin has been fingered in a huge scandal over the fact that she wanted the State's Public Safety Commissioner to fire the Alaska State Trooper who is trying to divorce her sister. He refused and was fired for it.

Apparently, it's so bad for Palin now that the Repiglicon Lt. Gov of Alaska (also running in a primary) pulled all of his ads that even mentioned her name!!!

I can't see a backlash in favour of either Stevens or Palin. Begich appears to have the seat sewn up.

5. Give A Lot of credit to the Anchorage Papers
They did the first digging about VECO and from there the State Attorney picked it up. A lot of the investigating went on far far away from Gonzo and the bozos in the DOJ...and by the time this story began to heat up, Gonzo was getting a lot of heat for the Rove DOJ purge. In essence, there are still a few honest and dedicated proseuctors who saw evidence of criminality and went after it. I suspect once this regime is removed and the DOJ is once again given its independence, we could see a bunch of prosecutions and convictions!
