2. Rule #1 (or maybe #3)
Don't mess with someone who is really good with a knife.

If they can see you coming, you will find yourself in serious trouble.

That's when it is nice to be carrying a pistol.

Listen to the reports - then get back to us with your criticisms... :eyes:

I'm not playing macho man here. I truly think that if one person is attacking another with a knife, out of 37 people you'd think a couple could jump him.

11. What a shame it was that you weren't there...
if you're not playing macho man then don't judge the passengers for panicking - you weren't there and you don't know how you would have reacted with blood flying everywhere.

helping?

6. Why didn't fellow passengers on 9/11 do anything about the hijackers?
What were they thinking?

13. Yep...
you have all the answers. The passengers are cowards because they wouldn't take on a 6 ft. 200 lb. knife wielding lunatic. What a bunch of losers.

Yep, right, uh huh, sure. :eyes:

16. I didn't say they were cowards.
BTW, the other day, here, a man was stabbing a woman in her car, bystanders jumped in and saved her... so it's not like it's an impossible feat.

17. if you'll recall, that story turned out not to be true
i thought the prosecutor just this week in the "osama's driver" case presented testimony that we shot down united 93 and that otherwise it would have hit washington

anybody got the link?

the pax taking the hijackers out was just a feel good story like tillman, lynch, etc -- propaganda machine going wild in those days

no way i'm going to fight a large man w. a large knife who is so fucked up on drugs or psychosis that he's chopping someone's head off, sorry, i'm barely over five feet, personally i think anybody who wasn't trained AND armed would have had a hell of a time doing anything except adding their own corpse to the list

7. Oh, I don't know, if I was being sprayed with blood
while a 6 ft, 200 lb maniac was getting stabby with a huge knife, I don't think I'd be inclined to lend a hand. Plus, he was stabbing him in the neck...That kid was dead pretty quick, not much to do.

YMMV.

14. Kitty Genovese syndrome
Edited on Thu Jul-31-08 04:35 PM by supernova
The woman who was murdered in her neighborhood at night, screaming for help, but nobody did. A few lights went on, but no one came to her aid.

Psychologists discovered that when people as a group witness a horrific crime, more often than we would like to admit no one does anything because they all think someone else will help.

I do feel sorry for that poor kid. :-(

20. I remember reading somewhere
That if you're being attacked you're more likely to recieve help if there's one or two people there than if there's 30.

27. No. This happened too fast.
People weren't sitting watching this happen and doing nothing.

By the time they realized what was going on, the boy was obviously dead.

15. Probably not
When an obvious lunatic is on this one of a kind rampage and most passengers are sleeping, there is very little that can be done.

This is one horrific murder.

18. Had it been a fight that escalated into violence, I'll bet people would
have been primed to step in. I think it's just so shocking to turn around and see a guy just coldly hacking away at someone else, your first instinct is to get the fuck out of there. I am a small woman, I can't stop the big guy who's hell-bent on cutting someone's head off anyway.

Edited on Thu Jul-31-08 05:08 PM by Evoman
I doubt anybody could have helped before this kid was dead. At least nobody else was hurt.

Not only that, but most of the passengers were sleepy and drowsy....I think when your awoken while a stabbing is occuring, your first instinct might be to run as fast as possible from the knife wielding maniac.

23. I have a lot of martial arts training.
Knives are nasty. Cops hate knives, more than guns. So do martial artists. Knives can kill you a lot of ways. Add to that the spectacle of someone getting stabbed multiple times and beheaded, and I know that I would be heading for the door, as fast as my little feet could carry me. What could have been done or what should have been done is simply conjecture with little basis in on-the-ground-at-the-time reality.

It's hard to keep your head during a charnel house scene.

I would face something like that only with, at the very minimum, a FIE-SPAS combat shotgun.

There was no warning before the first stab.

No noise, no arguments, no struggle. The bus was filled with blood before most even woke up.

And that was according to an interview I heard from a passenger on 'As it happens'.

where there was not a drunk, drugged, or mentally unbalanced acting person. Don't know why.

edited to add that there were small children on that bus who saw this happening. Bad enough for the adults to witness this violence, but for children it may be worse.
