Woman, 44, gives birth to her 18th child

ABBOTSFORD, British Columbia (AP) - A Romanian immigrant has given birth to her 18th child in British Columbia, making her the province's most prolific mother in 20 years.

Proud dad Alexandru Ionce said Saturday that his 44-year-old wife, Livia, gave birth on Tuesday. Their daughter Abigail weighed in at seven pounds, 12 ounces.

"We never planned how many children to have. We just let God guide our lives, you know, because we strongly believe life comes from God and that's the reason we did not stop the life," said Alexandru Ionce.

The couple immigrated to Canada from Romania in 1990 and now live in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Their 17 other children range in age from 20 months to 23 years old.

For one thing, infant mortality was high, and then there were other diseases that often carried off family members before old age.

For another thing, many hands were needed to keep the family in food, shelter, and clothing. And there were plenty of resources to exploit.

However, all that has changed now. The planet is in crisis, and a large factor in that crisis is too many people. That's why I chose not to have children. And I have not regretted that choice.

BTW, my grandmother came from a family of 12 children, 11 of whom survived infancy. You ask how parents manage large families? Well, according to my Grandma, they really didn't. The kids were expected to do their chores, and part of those chores were for the older children to look after the younger ones. At night after their parents would be asleep, the kids would sneak out of the house and run wild. They liked to steer the buggy to the top of a hill and then push it down, using the traces to guide it on their wild rides. This was 100 years ago, but I wouldn't be surprised if children in large families do the same sort of things today. (Oh, btw--Grandma only had two children who lived beyond infancy. Only one of her siblings had more than three children, and he stopped at six.)

None of them are underweight, that's just what a normal kid is supposed to look like.

My kids look like that and they eat like horses. Of course, we also live on a 3 acre ranchette with lots of chores, and their TV/videogame time is limited to an hour a day. My kids also walk 3/4's of a mile to the bus stop every morning.

I get that same comment all the time from people. "Do you feed your kids? They look underweight." It's a rude comment, and my response is equally as rude. "No, my kids are normal and healthy.
