Big Suprise: Bennigans and Steak and Ale go out of business

I dined at each one time, can't say I'd miss either.

Bennigan's and Steak-and-Ale restaurant chains, owned by Metromedia Restaurant Group, sought permission to liquidate in bankruptcy court protection, without citing a reason.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that the Metromedia Restaurant Group prepared a bankruptcy filing after allegedly violating several terms of a lending agreement with GE Capital Solutions.

The general manager of the Bennigan's at 11460 North Kendall Dr. told CBS4.com that he received a phone call Tuesday morning informing him to cease operations effective Tuesday. Monday was their last day of business.

Employees and management teams were not given any warning at all. ''I am as upset as all of the employees are,'' said the general manager, who did not want to be identified.

2. back in the 80's Bennigan's had great food...
but they've steadily declined over the years. It's a typical lifecycle for a food chain, unfortunately.

6. Yes they started out pretty good but prices went way up and quality way down.
That's not really a good long-term business plan.

7. well, the Bennigan's over on the west side of town has been dead for
a long time. It was a particularly awful one.

Does anyone know if Don Pablo's was part of this company?

All the Don Pablo's in Fort Worth are changing into Buffalo Wild Wings Grill and Bar establishments. Don Pablo's are big restaurants, or were anyway. Just how big does a chicken wing place need to be?

11. Midlevel chains here are starting to go under
with the chain offering closest to me going belly up about this time last year. There have been no takers to open the facility under new management.

Any place that catered to the middle class or people who wanted to be middle class is going to be in serious trouble. The working stiff's joint will probably stay afloat as the former middle class confronts declining expectations in their dining experiences.

Greasy spoons did OK in the Great Depression. Fine dining survived. Everybody else went out of business.
