Will it ever end?

News photographer detained at oil spill

TEXAS CITY — Police on Monday detained a Daily News photographer who refused to show officers his photographs of refinery workers attempting to mitigate a 500-gallon crude oil spill.

The 45-minute detention and police inquiries about whether the photographs contained images harmful to national security raised freedom of the press questions protected by the First Amendment.

I have to ask, if it's so secure how come you can see it from the road? Couldn't the terrorist just drive by and go, "hey look! a security flaw!" He didn't really need to read the paper to see it.

1. It will end when President Obama's new Attorney General announces ...
... that the Justice Department will send written guidelines to police agencies in America giving them standards for assuring that the Constitutional rights of Americans are properly maintained:

1. The first amendment, and the role of journalists and photo journalists under it, will be explained, and the excesses of the past several years will be curbed accordingly.

2. The fourth amendment, and the role it plays in the treatment of suspects, including the misuse of long, quasi torturous interrogations.

3. Any time any prisoner dies in custody under suspicous circumstances, the Justice Department will immediately send an FBI and Justice task force to take over those investigations and prosecutions.

4. A Taser Review Board will investigate all taser incidents that result in death, and will prosecute both the perps and the departments that have such incidents, where the facts show there is excessive force.

I'm a photojournalist and I cringe every time I point a camera now-a-days. Photo in question:

3. If you had told me ten years ago the rights of photo journalists would be routinely abused by police
I would never have believed it.

Once you allow cops to seize evidence of THEIR wrongdoing, you might as well forget prosecuting police for their crimes. It doesn't even have to be photo journalists, it can be any citizen who records the police misconduct. Taking photos cannot be interferring with police.

8. It is time to get some smaller cameras I guess...
Something that can be imbedded in a pair of glasses maybe. It's disgusting that it's come to this, but we saw it coming. All kinds of corporate messes will be covered up under the blanket of "national security"...

11. And the AG should be John Edwards
He's an excellent lawyer who has fought big corporations on behalf of us "little guys."

4. Will it ever END? It's barely gotten started I'm afraid.
And for those who think that January '09 will provide some magical tonic.....

Stay Tuned. You haven't seen anything yet.

12. All ignorance will end ...
except for those who cling to it; they'll become nothing, again.
