FDR was an idiot.
What kind of leader responds to a Japanese attack with a knee-jerk declaration of war against Japan? He should have gone after Iraq!

2. Well, he did declare war on Germany and Italy, and
then took a Germany first approach to resources.

4. FDR did not declare war on anyone
On Dec 8, 1941 he went to Congress (just like the Constitution requires) and asked it for a declaration of war against Japan and only Japan.

A few days later, AFTER Germany declared war on the U.S., he went back to Congress and asked for the declaration of war with Germany.

6. Thank you for the correction.

Evidently, FDR was not merely an idiot, but also some kind of bookish wimp who took seriously the old-fashioned notion of separation of powers into legislative, judicial, and executive branches.

8. Yeah, and it has taken the 'pukes more than 50 years to tear asunder that bleeding-heart liberal's/
that idiotic wimp's notion that our nation is a Republic having a constitutional form of government. The 'pukes' hatred of constitutional government is so painfully obvious that it manifests itself almost every word and deed. :P

he did tend to drink alot and he was great at manipulating people.

(Of course, you know he was a Democrat, and they always start the wars...)

5. Any guy who mixes Martinis for the reporters is my kind of guy.
Franklin prided himself on his Martinis.
Good man.

9. And may I add that Eleanor Roosevelt especially, would have
had tears in her eyes today listening to Senator Barack Obama... She was a real fighter and friend of minorities.

10. FDR governed in a world where the United States was not the sole superpower
Even if Saddam Hussein, Ahmadinejad, or any of the other right wing boogeyman actually had the hostile intentions that the right wing claims they did/do, they would not actually threaten the existence of western civilization.

Even if the right wing kooky scenario of Saddam Hussein giving a weapon of mass destruction to Al Qaeda and them setting it off in the United States had ever come true, it would not be the end of the United States. Yes many people would die and it would be a terrible tragedy. But we would still function as a nation the day after such an attack.

So when we talk about doomsday scenarios we're talking about a certain amount of our people getting killed, not the end of our nation. In the 1940's, the Axis Powers genuinely could have conquered Europe and Asia if the United States had stood by. And if they had beaten us to discovering the atomic bomb, that would have been our end as well.

"Appeasement is bad" may work as a foreign policy when you're a major power among many equals but as the world's last superpower it is idiotic. Benevolence toward weaker countries even when they act against your will is not only practical, it is essential.
