A Tale of Two Turtles
http://starbulletin.com/2008/07/24/features/memminger.html">North Shore turtle killing a sick tragedy

-snip-

Balazs was amazed that turtles would haul out at a beach so busy with humans. "We can't prove it, but they may be recognizing people as no longer their mortal enemies."

Sadly, he was mistaken. We are still their mortal enemies. On Saturday, some vicious idiot slaughtered Honey Girl, cutting off her head and fins and removing internal organs and leaving the body to rot on the beautiful sands of Laniakea.

I know this is supposed to be a "lite" column but this senseless act of violence against a trusting, peaceable, 200-pound, roughly 30-year-old female turtle leaves me outraged. If the perpetrator suddenly appeared before me, I would be hard pressed not to cut off HIS head and arms.

An outpouring of love from one turtle to another tore at the heartstrings of beachgoers at Laniakea Beach on Oahu's north shore.

News of the slaughtering of a turtle named "Honey Girl" brought tourists and visitors to the beach to watch the survivors. "Look at how much joy people get out of this and then something like this somebody does something horrible like that it's terrible," one visitor said.

But what happened Monday afternoon tugs at your heart even more. A large male, known as "Kuhina" appeared on the shore and quietly made his way to a memorial volunteers set up for "Honey Girl."

"They had to move the ropes aside so he could come straight up through and just came up and put his head right near the memorial right near the picture and just stayed."

Kuhina stayed for hours. Volunteers say it appeared as if he never took his eyes off her picture.

Words escape me.

2. So Sad...
I didn't see anything in the article about a reward for info for the arrest of the responsible sicko.
Bet somebody out there knows something.

7. I'm a big lover of chelonians
They are reptiles but they aren't just dumb soulless creatures. I have a Texas Desert Tortoise (gopherus berlandieri) as a pet and it has its own way of showing affection, nuzzling my face with its own when I pet its head. I heard a story about an owner whose tortoise would come out from behind the couch and sit up on its hind legs and beg for ice cream. A couple of hours ago, mine came up to my feet as I typed a post, and put its head against them as its way of asking for food. They are wonderful, peaceful creatures with their own personalities. Mine looks just like this:

10. I am a turtle parent, too.
I have two red-eared sliders and I just love them. I don't understand anyone doing this-horrible and cruel.

9. What if it was just a starving homeless guy?
would you still want to cut off his head and arms?

Okay it probably wasnt, but I just thought I would throw that in there for the sake of discussion.
