Flag will fly for Scout killed in Iowa tornado

WEST POINT, Neb. — A new flag will billow in the wind here with the Avenue of Flags commemorative veterans flags at Mount Hope Cemetery.

The new flag is red with a white laurel wreath encircling the Boy Scout emblem. It will fly in memory of 14-year-old Boy Scout Aaron Eilerts, who died last month when a tornado struck Little Sioux Scout Ranch in Iowa.

Aaron was a West Point native and member of Boy Scout Troop 165. He moved with his parents, Robert and Carol Eilerts, three years ago to Eagle Grove, Iowa, where he joined Boy Scout Troop 108.

He was known for his many acts of service, giving and kindness, which he carried out above and beyond his Boy Scout work. He sewed caring gifts for hospitalized people, teachers, the elderly and animals in shelters.

His father said he told his son, "If you feel in your heart it is the right thing to do, then do it."

And Aaron did.

He is remembered as a role model for youths.

"Aaron was in a league all of his own," said Cuming County Veterans Service Officer Robert Wostoupal.
