Ramona man who drove toward protesters is charged

By J. Harry Jones / San Diego Union-Tribune

A Ramona man who drove his pickup toward a group of anti-war protesters last month has been charged with misdemeanor reckless driving.

Keith Alan Davis, 55, was sent a letter Thursday ordering him to appear in court July 31. Davis could face up to six months in jail if convicted. Such cases, however, usually don't result in jail time.

Davis said he was only expressing his First Amendment right of self expression when he drove slowly onto the shoulder of state Route 67 near the intersection of Dye Road in Ramona June 29 and displayed his middle finger to each person protesting. He said he felt the protesters were “un-American.”

The protesters, however, say they had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit, and that Davis ran over several of their signs with messages such as “End the War in Iraq,” and “Support Our Troops, Send Them Home Now.”

“We reviewed the case carefully, read all the reports, and this was our conclusion about what charges he should face,” said Deputy District Attorney Dan Lamborn, chief of the El Cajon branch of the District Attorney's Office. .....(more)

1. This guy is a class A dipshit
He's been whining for weeks about how his first amendment rights are being abridged, because he should be allowed to drive offroad to run over protest signs. Even the counterprotestors across the street were corroborating their adversary's stories.

11. It sounds like he's drunk too much GOP Kool-aid...
...he sounds like a typical Constitution-hating GOPher.

Doesn't support "free speech" as a right for anyone, but has no problem bastardizing it to suit his immediate needs.

Fucking coward.

6. "expressing his First Amendment right of self expression"
No, what he did is called "assault with a deadly weapon".

Multiple counts- one for each person in the group of protesters.

and call it self-defense. Second Amendment trumps all other rights! :eyes:

8. All too typical of a San Diego fascist
They grow 'em 'right' down there. There's a certain brownshirt quality to them that makes an occurrence like this one surprisingly rare.

Good to see anti-war protesting in SD, though. There's hope for the city yet. A very beautiful city, the most beautiful in the U.S., but for most of the people...

9. Ramona is in an area known for a large component of "individualist" nut jobs

protesting in other areas in the metropolitan area - including Republican areas - I experienced strong support for protestors.

10. Yeah, Poway too
The desert suburbs to the north and east. Full of 'em. But the city is making progress. San Diego has decent pockets of activism, and I hope the trend continues.

12. We had a weekly Saturday protest in Poway and had 70% of those driving by
honk in favor.

13. Doesn't mean they live there
In the very mobile car culture of So Cal, that's a very unscientific and inaccurate way to measure local demographics.

The wingnuts are still thicker than flies on horse shit in SD County.

17. latest polling shows that SD county is only 3% away from turning Democratic

The city of San Diego has been democratic for some time and the northern county has been slowly but gradually turning less red all of the time.

14. I have a bunch of peace activists friends in SD
and they work hard on many causes. They have successes too, like the recent Blackwater deal. They ran them off :)

16. "the most beautiful in the U.S."
I think there's a city to your north that sits on a peninsula and has this amazing rust-colored bridge that might be in the running for that honor.

21. Fuck San Francisco
The bridge is about all you have. You can't beat San Diego's weather. And the fake limousine liberals in Frisco are as bad as the fascists in San Diego.

San Francisco: :puke:

15. Thank God for patriotic Americans like Keith Alan Davis.
We can't let those anti-war protesters have the freedom to express themselves. Those anti-war protest signs may become lethal weapons later, used to clobber the heads of innocent Americans.

:sarcasm:

18. Wow! This is good. I know the people he nearly ran over. in Ramona.

This is not the only group of "Enough" war protesters locally to be attacked.

A couple of months ago, a car pulled up at a La Mesa rally and a guy jumped out and tore up a protester's sign, and threatened him. I wonder if this is the same bully, or a different one?
