I am searching for an analogy.
Something is askew when John McCain wants to take credit for the success of the "surge" in Iraq but he accepts no responsibility for his decision to support the blunder of the invasion in the first place. Where is the democracy in the Middle East that was promised? We will be lucky if we can get any type of stable government, even a dictatorship.

It's much like driving the bus off the road and into the river but then bragging about your success in pulling the bus out of the river? After all the passengers have died and it is widely accepted as fact that the driver was at fault. McCain seems to be saying, "Hey, look at me! I was the first one to say that we could recover the bus from the river. It's been a success. Why can't you people see that?"

Can you think of a better analogy?

1. More like throwing your kid in the pool to teach him to swim and then rescuing the body.
I'm sure the politicians who backed the invasion will fund a nice memorial to the troops they "rescued".

3. Like setting your garage on fire so it matches the house you also torched.
