Did you see the Miss Universe Pageant?
First time I've watched this in over 10 years, and here's my random observations:

1) It's almost a guarantee that the 5 finalists will be represented by Colombia, Venezuela, and Philippines
- this year Ms. Philippines didn't look gorgeous at all; she looked like any lady in the neighborhood
-- not a surprise that this year she didn't make it to the top 15

2) Latin women dominate this throughout the years
- usually 3 of the 5 finalists are Latinas
- Ms. Venezuela and Ms. Colombia are nearly always among the top 3
- this year 4 of the 5 finalists are Latinas
- Ms. Venezuela won

3) A lot of brunettes; only about 10 blondes (no redheads)

4) How can Ms. Italy not speak English? Hello!

5) How can the best costume award go to Ms. Thailand, who was dressed like a Muay Thai fighter?!?

6) Jerry Springer is the host? Did the first 100 choices turn down the opportunity???

7) The ladies are younger than I expected
- I thought they would be in the 22-25 year old range
-- most of them were 19 or 20

8) During the broadcast "Reunification Palace" was mentioned
- the rooftop was shown with a military helicopter in the background
--this brought back memories of our last-minute evacuation in April of '75

9) Ms. USA fell (again) during the evening gown part of the pageant
- this makes it 2 years in a row
-- will walking be a separate component in the future?
-- I can only imagine the ridicule the next Ms. USA will get

10) I thought evening gowns were supposed to be elegant/classy/graceful
- Ms. Russia appeared to be wearing a white sheet
- Ms. Dominican Republic's gown consisted of lots of mirrored surfaces, while the rest was flesh colored

Although this was on TV Sunday night, I taped it and didn't see it until now (even though I already knew who won, as well as the tripping slip-up...pun intended).

Nice. :-)

6. A large majority of the European ladies
spoke English (not perfectly but they managed). It greatly surprised me that she didn't speak English, that's all.

14. Oh
A friend of mine who lives in Lucca, in Tuscany, is a volunteer teacher of English at a very exclusive private high school. English is no longer the universal language it once almost was. Now, it's better, I think, to speak Spanish and/or French (which was always the language of diplomats) and/or any Asian language.

8. I saw some of the show, and it was amazing to hear the names of the
sites of some of the most bloody places in the war described and shown as pretty tourist sites.

They talked like the war never happened.

12. Yes, I noticed that as well.
I'm surprised they even mentioned that Ho Chi Minh city used to be called Saigon.

While watching I kept thinking "from the early 60's to mid 70's a massive war happened there, and we are feeling the scars from that disaster to this day"...while they present everything in a cheerful manner with lots of tourist attractions.

27. I met a bunch of Vietnamese tourists, the other day,

and when I asked them what part of the country was home they said "Saigon."

To clarify, these were tourists from Vietnam, who live there now, not pre-1975 expats.

26. Perspective, my friend
Berlin was almost completely destroyed in WW 2, yet it is considered a normal city.

Vietnam has moved on from the war (really - they LOVE Americans over there. Almost no one I met had hard feelings. Except that one guy in the war crimes museum, but I guess you would too if you had three limbs blown off by an old bomb in a field. So I give him a pass.)

Anyway, American don't hate the British and we fought 2 wars with them. Compared to other people in the region and the world at least Americans are personally generous. The Vietnamese hate the Chinese for historical reasons and economic reasons - why do you think they kicked out all the Chinese after 1975? Most of the boat people were Chinese. They hate the Japanese because of WW2 - compared to the Japanese we were a walk in the park. French? They are somewhat liked.

9. I didn't watch it but I used to a long time ago.
I got bored with them and finally realized most of them look alike. But did you know that a lot of the ladies re-enter these contests several times? That is why a lot of them are in their mid 20's because they've been trying to be the prettiest since they were like 16!.

and was by far more beautiful than Venezuela's, but still got a solid second place score. Judging by all the press that Venezuela got leading up to the event, many people already knew she was going to win. When she won after botching her final question answer, I knew then it was setup. :)

And I agree with many of your points. I couldn't believe Jerry Springer was a host.

Maybe it was just that moment but the girls I saw were amazons, like grazing at six feet tall, even the Latina. When did they start growing so tall?

And don't get me started on 'Miss Polaris'. What a drama queen.

24. I never said I was.
This is the #1 beauty pageant in the world; all of these women should be absolutely gorgeous. When any of the contestants looks ok (not gorgeous or stunning or whatever), it's a huge disappointment.

What I want to know is the underlying sentiment in your remark. Hmmm...

The young woman is lovely, and it's only "disappointing" to your own personal taste. Hmmm....

32. There you go again; your spinning is perfect
for insane McCain.

An average/pretty good looking woman shouldn't be in the top beauty pageant in the world. Apparently you feel otherwise. Considering you didn't watch the pageant or the Philippine tune-up for it your opinion is worthless.

28. I just had to look her up
No interest in the pageant, but that comment did pique my interest, too.

Here she is, in all her repulsive glory:

Ewwww.

She needs to dye her hair blond and get some implants.

29. I never said she was repulsive, and that pic
doesn't do much justice for someone competing in the top Beauty Pageant in the world.

Blond hair? Who suggested she should dye her hair blond? Oops, that was you.

Apparently you didn't watch the pageant; only 10 blondes (approximately)...so I hardly consider someone being blond and having implants an important part of competing.

Who supported or endorsed implants? Wasn't me; a woman's mind and eyes are more attractive and captivating than breasts could ever be (to me at least).

Did you see Binibining Pilipinas? She got a lot of criticism for not answering questions during that competition.

Instead of taking my comments where you want them to go, please just simply stay with the comments I made.
