3. Just Ford
He got the standard 30 days which ends sometime in the next day or so but I guess not soon enough for some.

7. so?
he held the office and ran the country - in a time of need mind you.

how do you propose we treat a VP, who ends up taking over for a president who's resigned, once he has passed away?

10. He wasn't elected VP either!
Edited on Thu Jan-25-07 10:35 AM by LiberalFighter
Anyone that pardons the President of all crimes both charged and uncharged is crooked.

All the other VP's that stepped into the job of President due to death were elected as VP and therefore considered elected when they became President.

17. Do you know your history?
Ford became VP because Spiro Agnew resigned after being charged with tax evasion.

Ford was not elected on the same ticket as Nixon. Ford was chosen under the terms of the 25th Amendment not by the voters.

20. I'm probably older than you and it happened when I was in college
I was so wanting Nixon to be out of office that I bought a calendar specifically printed with number of days left in office. I dutifully crossed off each day that passed.

16. Or, or just maybe
He really did pardon Nixon for the good of the nation.

Oh well, what the hell, when Bill shuffles off I am sure the RW assholes will act just like the LW assholes are now because assholes always stink the place up.

9. *shrug* He held the office.
clearly you are of the opinion that we should treat a president's death on a case by case basis - and change how and when they are paid their respects once they die.

this is a respect for the office moreso than the man.

11. When you give respect to the office you give respect to the President
Ford, Nixon, Reagan, Bush 41, Bush 43 are/were not worthy of the office.

12. When respect is given to a President that is not worthy of the office
disrespect is given to the office of President.

8. A person doesn't automatically get my respect
He has to get down in the dirt and beg and grovel for it.

14. IA, it's depressing to see those flags still down for so long
And you start to think, how many reasons are there for having it down? We seem to get to a point where it is down so much, it loses its emotional effect.

19. This Is An Amazingly Petty Gripe. The Half-Mast Flags Hurt You Somehow?
Give me a break. It is customary to fly the flag at half mast for 30 days when such an event occurs. It doesn't hurt you in any way and I find the feigned disgust to be quite petty.

Gerald Ford deserved this respect in death as much as anyone else. I find it disengenuous, selfish, petty and spiteful to be counting the minutes until the 30th day arrived just so that a thread could be posted slamming the concept as if the fact a flag is flying lower on a flagpole affects your or anyone else's life in any way shape or form.

Like I said, give me a break.
