Each time I hear TeeBonePicker in his ads, I want to scream.
That man is as worthless as alligator shit in the Mississippi River delta.

His 'plan' has, at its heart, the sole betterment of .......... TeeBonePicker.

6. yep, I still think someone should
sue him for slander on that one. I'd like to sue him for this mess we're in....he has to take some of the blame for Bush.

8. public figures
and rightly so... have lesser protection against slander.

it would be an immense chill on free speech.

How would you like to worry about being sued for your political comments?

I certainly wouldn't

10. ok, I hear ya...but still....
he sponsored a group who lied in national TV ads--I wish there was some accountability for that. I think if I went on TV and said the George Bush fathered my children (god I just puked a little), then killed my parents...I think there would be SOME recourse. but if I told my group of friends he's an ass hole (like I've NEVER said THAT before...) it's a way smaller scale, and I'm not trying to change an election, nor do I have the power to.

I'm all for free speech, just tired of people with power and big bank roles being able to make (or bend) the rules....
sigh....

time for another glass of wine.

11. you're saying
it seems that the same speech that would be ok in a small forum, is not ok merely because of the size of the forum or audience?

I'd disagree, but remember - DU is internationally read and has quite a large audience. Plenty of people say things here against bush et al that would be slander if said against non public figures.
we counter bad speech with good speech, but if we didn't have broad discretion in commenting on public figures, it would be an immense chill on free speech

consider also that rather and mapes would be prone to similar lawsuits as the swift boat ninnies (tm)

9. yeah he's creepy. But, his ads don't help mccain.
I'm hoping they might in some small way help Obama when he says we can't drill our way out of this problem.
