What Dennis Has Done
Imagine that you've not eaten a decent meal in months, that the hunger is squeezing and burning you from the inside, and that suddenly you find yourself at an 18-course feast of a dinner -- say perhaps at a summit meeting of world leaders discussing food shortages. You sit down at the table, and they bring in giant platters of the most delicious foods, building a rolling mountain chain of delicacies from one end of the table to the other. On Thursday, July 10, 2008, Americans, rich and poor, had this experience. Our national sustenance is found in our Constitution and our Bill of Rights, and it's been many months that we've been deprived of them. In May of 2006, then House Speaker to be Nancy Pelosi had ordered impeachment "off the table." On Thursday, Congressman Dennis Kucinich put it back on, and we suddenly feasted our eyes on our recently lost Fourth Amendment, on our old staple Habeas Corpus, on our sweet Freedom of Speech, and on our bountiful right to be represented and hold our elected officials to the rule of law.

How did this happen? Millions of Americans made clear to Pelosi their demand for impeachment hearings for Cheney and Bush. And one member of Congress took unusual steps to bring impeachment back from exile. First Kucinich introduced 3 articles of impeachment against Cheney. Then he introduced 35 against Bush. And on Thursday he introduced a single article of impeachment against Bush charging him with misleading Congress into a war on Iraq. And in each case, Kucinich introduced his resolution on the floor of the House, forcing the issue into the media and public discourse, and forcing a vote by his colleagues.

Apparently feeling the pressure and reluctant to have Kucinich raise impeachment on a weekly basis, Pelosi told the media that she expected the Judiciary Committee to consider the matter this time, at least in some half-way sort-of-impeachment hearing. Kucinich held a press conference on Thursday at which he said that what he wants is an opportunity to present his proposals to the Judiciary Committee.

Imagine, for the sake of argument, that Kucinich gets what he's asking for or that Pelosi follows through on her statement in one way or another. The public pressure that has been building for over three years will have achieved a victory. The work of Judiciary Committee members led by Robert Wexler lobbying Chairman John Conyers to begin impeachment hearings will have contributed. But the proximate cause of Pelosi's restoration of impeachment to our public table will have been Kucinich's willingness to introduce impeachment resolutions.

What, one has to wonder, would happen if other members of Congress, perhaps beginning with Wexler, were to introduce their own resolutions, with or without cosponsors, with or without forcing votes on the floor of the House. What if each of the dozens of members who have signed onto Kucinich's resolution and Wexler's letter, or to Conyers' own resolution in the last Congress, or who otherwise profess to support impeachment -- what if each of them were to introduce a resolution each week until Pelosi and Conyers granted them, too, a committee hearing? How many such hearings would have to happen before a full-blown impeachment hearing was begun?

Representatives willing to finally adhere to their oaths of office could introduce articles of impeachment on Cheney or Bush or both. They could plagiarize any of Kucinich's 39 articles or borrow any of the hundreds of others posted on impeachment websites and in books on the topic. Or they could write their own. They could also forego introducing actual articles of impeachment and follow the example that helped drive Alberto Gonzales to resignation. This was the full text of the widely supported resolution that chased him out of town:

"RESOLUTION
"Directing the Committee on the Judiciary to investigate whether Alberto R. Gonzales, Attorney General of the United States, should be impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors.

"Resolved, That the Committee on the Judiciary shall investigate fully whether sufficient grounds exist for the House of Representatives to impeach Alberto R. Gonzales, Attorney General of the United States, for high crimes and misdemeanors."

How hard would it be to rewrite that for Dick Cheney and introduce it once a week? With thousands of Americans working endless hours, fasting, risking arrest, and otherwise sacrificing for impeachment, can't a few congress members be troubled to read a few sentences into the Congressional Record?

My favorite resolution, which I've been trying to get someone to introduce for years now, and which Kucinich included as #27 among his 35, would simply charge Cheney and/or Bush with refusing to comply with numerous subpoenas, ordering current and former staffers not to comply, and refusing to enforce contempt citations. Such a resolution is not partisan, controversial, or subject to any concern regarding Congressional complicity in the offenses. The related investigation would take no time or resources because there's nothing to investigate. And this impeachment would give life to other oversight techniques. Congressman Henry Waxman's proposal to get a bill vetoed that would eliminate Karl Rove's position in the future is cute, but impeachment might actually force Rove to talk.

In 1973, nearly 90 Democratic House members introduced separate bills to impeach Nixon. Two-thirds of them were to investigate whether Nixon's deeds deserved impeachment; the other third were actual articles of impeachment. Most of them had no cosponsors. Today there are at least 90 members of Congress who have shown some form of support for impeachment. If they act now, at the very least they will go on record as having wanted to preserve the rule of law. If they will not act now, please ask them exactly what would constitute an offense grave enough to move them to action.

41. I met him twice; once in '03, once in '04.
I've never forgotten the impact he had on me.

The first time, I hung out for an hour where he was going to be speaking; plenty of people there, but not so crowded that it was hard to find a place to park my car or myself.

When he was done speaking, some of us stayed for lunch, and for a chance to speak to him face to face, one-on-one. That gathering was attended by some LaRouche disruptors. He handled them so well, quietly allowing them a moment to have their say, quietly and politely responding, and then, when they attempted to shout him down when he turned to listen to someone else, quietly told them that their audience was over, and moved away with the person he was talking to. When no one else would engage them, they left.

When my turn came up, I asked about NCLB. A neglected issue. I'm a teacher, and I already knew he owned the other issues of import. NCLB, with bipartisan support and the democratic goal of "closing the achievement gap," no matter that the underlying intent actually WIDENS that gap, is a touchy political subject. It's rare to hear a democrat speak out on anything but "fixing and funding."

I didn't identify myself as a teacher, or identify my position. He took my hand, looked me in the eye, and said firmly, (not verbatim; content is correct, if not the exact words:) "This testing kids to death, and narrowing curriculum to teach to the test, is nonsense. It's not working, and it's not achieving the purpose." He went on to talk about things that you can find in his policy papers, about nurturing, supporting, the arts, etc.; all good things.

He didn't have to refer to planned remarks; he knew the issue, and he knew where he stood.

What really impressed me was that he did this for each person he spoke to. He looked them in the eye, listened patiently, and answered, not with a canned response, but directly to their point. He knew the issues, often discussing them in more depth than his listeners were aware of, and he knew where he stood. While he was responding to someone, the rest of us may have been listening, but his attention was focused on the person he was speaking to. We were not just an audience he wanted to impress. We were real people, and he was having a real conversation.

I met him a second time in a private home; a large one, since there were a couple hundred of us there for dinner. I saw the same thing. This time I didn't ask him about an issue. I just took the opportunity to shake his hand and thank him for being there for me, for running. His formal "listening" posture relaxed, he smiled, a smile that lit his whole face, and replied that he was honored.

If you ever have the opportunity to meet him, don't pass it up.

7. Why aren't some others introducing their own articles indeed?
Again my hat is off to Dennis to do what must be done. Will others please do their civic duty that they were sworn to do and throw in their voices on these very important matters? The people's anger is building because of the offenses committed against us and the delays in prosecution or pooh poohing it as pelosi and others have done will escalate that anger. You are answerable to the people in spite of yourselves and your corruptness and answer one day you will.

10. Dennis Kucinich, America's Congressman.
I've seen a lot of nasty mean things said about Democratic congressman and candidate for re-election to the House Dennis Kucinich on this web site over the years.

Some have accused him of not being able to get things done. Some have mocked him and accused him of being a joke. They have demeaned his physical appearance, and have made sly unfunny jokes questioning his mental health.

In a perfect world, those slandering libelous shit throwers would show up on a thread and apologize for their ignorance and their short sightedness; There lack of knowledge about how things actually get done. They would apologize for there mean spirits and their arrogant assumptions.

I don't expect that will happen. They know who they are and most of them aren't big enough people to actual handle something like that.

But damn it Dennis, you have made me proud and happy. The fact this is moving, however little and however slowly shows that persistence and a sense of righteous justice and public service does move even the apathetic corrupt and jaded intransigence of a Nancy Pelosi.

I have seen a lot of trash written here abut him, but to me he is the most honest & gutsy politician i have ever seen. Every other politician tends to start dancing around some of the questions. NOT DENNIS!

"The Democratic Leadership Council's agenda is indistinguishable from the Republican Neoconservative agenda," Dennis Kucinich

If he goes against it, he can no longer continue to
(as he has in some cases) distance himself from any part of Bush's Iraq policy.
And he will also have to do this while knowing that
any previous campaign cycle criticism of Bush might just be brought back to haunt him.

If he supports it, well, ...on a cold day in hell perhaps!

A Prayer for America
by US Rep Dennis Kucinich

"I offer these brief remarks today as a prayer for our country, with love of democracy, as a celebration of our country. With love for our country. With hope for our country. With a belief that the light of freedom cannot be extinguished as long as it is inside of us. With a belief that freedom rings resoundingly in a democracy each time we speak freely. With the understanding that freedom stirs the human heart and fear stills it. With the belief that a free people cannot walk in fear and faith at the same time..."

Please. Obama had to be vetted and approved before he got this kind of money. Big corporate money is needed early in a campaign to get traction, and THEN the gazillion little $25 pledges come.

On edit: I know about the alleged "money comes not from the company but from individual members" blah blah blah. It's still money from the owners and shareholders.

55. Give me access to the MSM and I guarantee that I can make your life a living hell, perhaps
get you imprisoned or even executed, in under a year's time.

The MSM is a propaganda organ par excellance. What they hype sells. What they refuse to hype dies on the vine.

A good example of that is how the MSM sold the Harry Potter books. They are a seven-volume "first novel": nice premise, amateurish execution. Yet Rowling is now a billionaire because of the relentless hype and promotion given her books. Compare her work to that of Tamora Pierce. Pierce is a very solid writer, much better than Rowling. One of her tetrologies ("Protector of the Small") is a superb work of craft. It takes Keladry of Mindelan from 10yo probationary page to 18yo knight, the first "lady knight" in 100 years. Yet Pierce gets no hype, and so she only makes a nice living with her writing.

The MSM refuses to even acknowledge Kucinich's existance as a serious candidate for the nomination. Nobody can get past that kind of treatment.

34. Kuchinich
Is 10 times the hero that Obama is. Obama is a crafty political machine, but does he really stick his neck out like Kuchinich, NO.

48. Right or wrong, I don't think the Dem's in congress want anything to do with impeachment
They want Bush front and center as a lightning rod for American discontent through the election. If he goes before then, the anger may focus on congress instead...that they won't risk.

They'll go through a few motions, but no real action.

62. Precisely Why Introducing a Single Article Was Sheer Genius
I agree with you that up until now Congress wanted nothing to do with impeachment, since the evidence would reveal their own complicity in the myriad crimes committed by this administration. But limiting the indictment to the single charge of lying to Congress in order to mislead them into supporting military action automatically lets them off the hook. Indeed, Congress now has everything to gain and nothing to lose by following through with impeachment. Sure, Bush is guilty of all 35 original articles and more, but hey - whatever it takes, y'know?

50. Thank you David.
If they will not act now, please ask them exactly what would constitute an offense grave enough to move them to action.

56. REPLACE
Replace Conyers with Wexler. Replace Pelosi with Kucinich, and this would be on its way by now. Not going to happen, but imagine how different America would be if THEY were put in those places in 06. Further. There is always next year. We can't impeach them then, even if Obama wins. But we can go after them in some legal form. And those two have the balls to do it.

58. I've grabbed a minute to dash off an LTE:
Use every soapbox available. If something I said moves you, run with it and write your paper, too.

It has become abundantly clear that this administration has repeatedly lied to the American people and to Congress (a crime) about the need for war in Iraq. It broke the law by spying on innocent Americans before the war even began, even before 9/11. It has committed crimes of rendition and torture of individuals since found to be completely innocent in violation of US and international law. These, among many other crimes that have been well-documented and brought to light, must be accounted for and prosecuted if we are to call ourselves a self-respecting nation of laws ever again. The great hypocrisy isn't lost on the American people when the Republicans will spend tens of millions of dollars persecuting a former president over a personal peccadillo, yet lift not a finger when tens of thousands have died for a useless war for oil and thousands are still displaced from natural disasters. Incompetence, graft, hypocrisy and arrogance don't even begin to cover the depravity that now defines Brand GOP.

It is neither the flag, nor a lapel pin, nor the Bible, nor a Pledge, nor any other superficial thing besides the Founding Document that makes America "America". If we turn our backs on that, should we ignore our rights and duties defined in it, we absolutely will cease to exist as the nation we were until the year 2000. We will become something less just, less well-off, less free, and, well, "less".

59. K & R for Dennis!
I wanted him as our nominee, but in another example of "perhaps everything happens as it should," he may be more effective in his current position. I wish him every success, and hope this is the beginning of a snowball that turns into a landslide!

70. Oh I certainly hope they do all jump on in with separate bills of impeachment!
I was looking at my latest replies from another of my occasional pleas for impeachment to my Sentor Feinstein and Speaker Pelosi, telling me that would be disruptive, and sighing, when I heard of the new Kucinich move. Bless our Dear Dennis and yes please I hope many others dash on in.

Love the idea of focusing on refusal to comply with subpoenas as an issue-- simple, procedural, clean.
