Student Who Took Religious Icon Getting Death Threats

By Cheryl Getuiza
FOX 35 NEWS

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35, Orlando) --A UCF student claims he’s getting death threats for messing with something sacred.

Webster Cook says he smuggled a Eucharist, a small bread wafer that to Catholics symbolic of the Body of Christ after a priest blesses it, out of mass, didn’t eat it as he was supposed to do, but instead walked with it.

Catholics worldwide became furious.

Webster’s friend, who didn’t want to show his face, said he took the Eucharist, to show him what it meant to Catholics.

Webster gave the wafer back, but the Catholic League, a national watchdog organization for Catholic rights claims that is not enough.

Snip

More here.

All I have to say is :wtf: :grr: :eyes:

And I agree with what PZ had to say about it.

1. Oh god. Everyone did this in 2nd grade.
It was a game. We would see who could collect the most without getting caught.

12. Jesus is probably sighing: Why don't they understand?
It's not about a piece of bread.

For fun, obtain thousands of the exact same cracker from the manufacturer, and then add said stolen cracker to a pile - then invite the clergy and the concerned parishioners to pick out which it is.

If it's special, surely there's some way of discerning that?

It is certainly sacred when it gets pooped out...I'm sure I've Jesus in the toilet bowl more than once...

And #23:
I'd love a bold newspaper editor to title the article Wacky cult wants magic biscuit back and tell the exact same story with a few changes to exclude any references to Catholicism or Christianty until the very end.

No doubt all the Christers would be laughing their asses off at such patently stupid behaviour - until they realised what was going on.

5. Your own, personal, Jesus...
Your own, personal, Jesus
someone to hear your prayers,
someone who cares

Your own, personal, Jesus
someone to hear your prayers,
someone who's there

Feeling unknown
and you're all alone,
flesh and bone,
by the telephone,
lift up the receiver,
I'll make you a believer

Take second best,
put me to the test,
things on your chest,
you need to confess,
I will deliver,
you know I'm a forgiver

Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith

Your own, personal, Jesus
someone to hear your prayers,
someone who cares

Your own, personal, Jesus
someone to hear your prayers,
someone to care

Feeling unknown
and you're all alone,
flesh and bone,
by the telephone,
lift up the receiver,
I'll make you a believer
I will deliver,
you know I'm a forgiver

Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith

Reach out and touch faith

8. Point of correction
Edited on Wed Jul-09-08 02:26 AM by Book Lover
Well, two actually. That second sentence doesn't actually contain a verb, but let's not let insignificant things like that bother us for the moment. Catholics believe that the eucharist *is* the body of Christ after transubstantiation; not that it "symbolic* the Body of Christ".

* {shudder}

on edit: Geez, third correction - it is not an icon! Christ, will you please pound some sense into these people's heads!

11. It isn't an icon. It's an idol.
It is a thing. Sorry, but if you believe it is transfigured, it is. But if you don't believe it is transfigured, it is not.

In Catholicism, an icon is an image of God, Mary, or a saint. An idol is an image of a deity not recognized by the RCC. This story is written for shite.

20. It is late. I know how to Google. I also like Wikipedia . . .
I read in the Catholic Encyclopedia frequently. I already knew the definition of transubstantiation. Thanks for the effort. Sorry I bothered you.

It all sounds like cannibalistic hegemony to me.:hi:

9. Is the wafer some kind of idol?
Some kind of image of God forbidden by the Ten Commandments? I had no idea that Catholicism was so fanatical about a piece of bread?

13. Actually, it is God
After consecration, Catholics believe the wafer becomes the body of Jesus. Betcha never knew Catholics were into magic :-)

Are there any other religions where the most sacred ritual involves EATING their God? I don't think so!

15. Vampire hunters always have a shit pile of them in movies . . .
I wonder where they get them? Also, the vampires have to rest in 'consecrated' earth so why do the vampire hunters have to 're-consecrate' the earth with holy wafers - one time wasn't enough? Also, if the vampires could rest in it if it was already 'consecrated', what does 're-consecrating' it do? Just wondering.....
