Greenpeace Japan detainees need your help re: 23-day jail detention
July 8, 2008

Free our activists!

Total Letters sent globally: 220,000

Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki are charged with stealing a box of whale meat which they presented as evidence of a whale meat smuggling operation. The activists requested a Japanese government investigation into the scandal, and the Tokyo public prosecutor agreed there was sufficient evidence of wrongdoing. His investigation has now concluded. The only persons charged are the Greenpeace activists who presented the evidence.

Our activists are innocent of any crime. They have been arrested for returning whale meat that was stolen from Japanese taxpayers, and exposing a fraud that may reach high into the Japanese government agencies that run the whaling program. Please write to the Japanese Prime Minister and Foreign Minister and demand the activists’ immediate release. snip

It's been 19 days since I last wrote to you about my Greenpeace colleagues in detention in Japan. A lot has happened during that time, but my friends Junichi and Toru will remain in detention without charge for the full 23 days allowable under Japanese law.
Greenpeace staff and supporters around the world have held peaceful protests at Japanese embassies, and more than 200,000 of you have already written to the Japanese government. Your support has meant a great deal to Junichi and Toru.

Junichi asked that I send you the following message:

Thank you everyone for your support and vigilance over the last days. Thank you to the 200,000 of you who have sent the email to the Japanese Government asking for our release and those of you who have sent it to your friends. We have heard from our lawyers about how many emails that have been sent, and it reminds us that we are not alone. Thank you also to those who mounted peaceful protests and vigils at Japanese Embassies around the world calling for justice for myself and Toru and justice for the whales. It helps us to know that so many are thinking of us and of the fate of the whales.

We STILL need your help. We have been ordered to remain in custody for a total of 23 days -- the maximum allowed under Japanese law -- without being charged with any crime.

Please encourage your friends to send an email if they have not already. Keep watching for news from Greenpeace of more actions you can take and make sure that the global demand for our release and to investigate the whale meat scandal we exposed is heard loud and clear here in Japan.

With hope and thanks,

Junichi Sato
Whale Campaign Coordinator
Greenpeace Japan
Junichi and Toru have sacrificed 18 days of freedom to protect whales and expose the scandal and corruption of the whaling industry. Please, take just a second of your time to show your support for their efforts.

TAKE ACTION NOW! http://usactions.greenpeace.org/action/

I'll be in touch as we learn the fates of Junichi and Toru. Please keep them both in your thoughts, and thank you for your support.

Your Friend,

John Hocevar
Oceans Campaigner

p.s. Public pressure from around the world is critical to this case. So please, forward this email to your friends, and share the importance of this case with them. Read more about Junichi and Toru.

Mister Splashy Pants, the humpback whale, just heard that two of his Greenpeace pals have been arrested. He, too, is amazed that they've been locked up for exposing the truth -- and he's going to do something about it. Are you? Play the Mr. Splashy Pants game!
