Iraq insists on withdrawal timetable for US troops

By Sally Buzbee / Associated Press

BAGHDAD - Iraq's national security adviser said Tuesday his country will not accept any security deal with the United States unless it contains specific dates for the withdrawal of U.S.-led forces.

The comments by Mouwaffak al-Rubaie were the strongest yet by an Iraqi official about the deal now under negotiation with U.S. officials. They came a day after Iraq's prime minister first said publicly that he expects the pending troop deal with the United States to have some type of timetable for withdrawal.

President Bush has said he opposes a timetable. The White House said Monday it did not believe Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was proposing a rigid timeline for U.S. troop withdrawals.

U.S. officials had no immediate comment Tuesday on al-Rubaie's statement.

Al-Rubaie spoke to reporters after briefing Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani in Najaf on the progress of the government's security efforts and the talks.

"Our stance in the negotiations underway with the American side will be strong ... We will not accept any memorandum of understanding that doesn't have specific dates to withdraw foreign forces from Iraq," al-Rubaie said.

5. My sentiments EXACTLY.
My fervent hope this election cycle was that someone could get nominated that would bring the troops home within months of getting elected.

Don't even bother mentioning DK, he couldn't get elected in the GE on a bet.

That this person means nothing? I'm about to cancel that paper for growing RW slant.

Time to start withdrawing now. Yesterday, actually.

12. Why can't we just declare victory? After all, Saddam Hussein is gone
and there are no weapons of mass destruction. Our aims have been accomplished. We could declare a public holiday celebrating "The Glorious George W. Bush/Dick Cheney Victory," hold parades, hear speeches, throw confetti, and set off fireworks while our troops withdraw en masse from happy, grateful Iraq. No doubt the Iraqis would want to name some grand, public square for Bush, and rename Baghdad's airport the "Condoleeza Rice International Airport" with appropriate ceremonies. Meanwhile, out in South Dakota, preparations could begin to add a new head to the monument at Mount Rushmore, though I, personally, could think of some more appropriate uses for the head in question.

21. The White House said Monday it did not believe Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki
See! This is the Repukes at their best, they simply wish to believe what they want. Despite facts, nothing happens that would sounds bad or make McChimpster cry and be all upset. No one wants to deal with a grumpy Dick. So it didn't happen, no that guy didn't say what you thought he said. Lives are lost, dollars are spent. You know, money.
