9 more American soldiers die in Iraq; Bush sees "important progress"

WASHINGTON — President Bush said yesterday that his decision to send more troops to Baghdad is yielding "gradual but important" progress in Iraq. He portrayed himself as steadfast while Democrats squabble over strategy.

BAGHDAD, Iraq- Nine U.S. soldiers died in two separate incidents north of Baghdad, the military said Tuesday.

Six soldiers were killed when a bomb exploded near their vehicles during a combat operation Monday in Salahuddin province, the military said in a statement.

7. Well, as Bush statements go, that's accurate.

There has been some "progress" made in Baghdad, in that there aren't 50 murdered bodies showing signs of torture found on the street every morning. It's down to less than a dozen most days, because the Shiite death squads are lying low or in Iran. Also, there's been just about no rocketing/mortaring of the Green Zone for the past three weeks (it was getting to be several times a day in December).

Hasn't really affected the car-bomb and IED guys; they're as busy as ever. And what it means for eventual pacification and unity of the entire country under an elected government is anyone's guess.

Oh, I do know one thing. Whatever shape Iraq eventually winds up in, Iraqi Kurdistan is not going to be part of it. They're practically issuing their own passports and printing their own money up there. See the "60 Minutes" story on that last week for details.
