Let's all take a look back at Governor George W. Bush's 2000 website
Thank you archive.org!

The link to the main page listing for all of his positions on different issues back in 2000 can be found here:
http://web.archive.org/web/20001109012700/www.georgewbush.com/issues/index.html

It's a horrifying exercise to look through the different issues to see the things he has failed to deliver on. Sadly, it's the fucking stupid things that he promised that he actually delivered on.

Some of my favorites:
Governor Bush on education:
http://web.archive.org/web/20001109012700/http://www.georgewbush.com/issues/education.html

Governor Bush on defense:
http://web.archive.org/web/20001109012700/http://www.georgewbush.com/issues/defense.html

Governor Bush on health care and the uninsured:
http://web.archive.org/web/20001109012700/http://www.georgewbush.com/issues/healthcare.html

Governor Bush on the environment and natural resources:
http://web.archive.org/web/20001109012700/http://www.georgewbush.com/issues/environment.html

Governor Bush on foreign policy:
http://web.archive.org/web/20001109012700/http://www.georgewbush.com/issues/foreignpolicy.html

Governor Bush on government reform:
http://web.archive.org/web/20001109012700/http://www.georgewbush.com/issues/govreform.html

Governor Bush on the budget and use of the surplus:
http://web.archive.org/web/20001109012700/http://www.georgewbush.com/issues/budget.html

And, my personal favorite, Governor Bush on energy:
http://web.archive.org/web/20001109012700/http://www.georgewbush.com/issues/energy.html

It's a fascinating and scary trip down memory lane.

Oh and a bonus! John McCain on the issues......back in 2000:

3. He was already preaching "homeland".Restore Morale?Well-defined objectives?
Oh my word. It is something to read. I wonder if he could pronounce all these words, much less understand them.

Defense

Governor Bush believes that a strong, capable and modern military is the foundation of the peace we enjoy today and hope to extend for future generations. The military of the present must be better supported and respected. It must also be challenged and transformed to become the military of the future. The right choices must be made to renew the bond of trust between the President and the military, protect America with an effective national missile defense, and create a military capable of meeting the challenges of the 21st Century.

Governor Bushs Principles for a Strong National Defense

Governor Bush believes that Americas military is faced with a moment of opportunity an opportunity to transform itself, and thus ensure peace for generations. Seizing this opportunity will require spending more, but equally as important, spending more wisely. Governor Bush knows the next President must:

# Restore the morale of our armed forces. Governor Bush will respect the military, and earn the respect of the men and women who wear our uniform.

# Insist that deployments have well-defined objectives. Our military requires the rallying point of a defining mission: to be able to fight and win our nations wars and thereby deter war. Sending our military on vague, aimless and endless deployments is a sure way to destroy morale. Nothing would be better for morale than clarity and focus from the Commander-in-Chief.

# Focus on defending the American homeland. Rogue nations are developing missiles capable of hitting American soil, as well as threatening our allies and forces overseas. Defending America itself must now assume a high priority.

# Prepare the military for the challenges of the information age. Power is increasingly defined not by mass or size, but by mobility, swiftness and stealth. Influence is increasingly measured in information. Yet todays military is still organized more for Cold War threats than for the challenges of a new century for industrial age operations, rather than for information age battles.

# Begin to build the military of the future. The choices made by the next President will affect American defense for decades to come. We must ensure that our armed forces stay generations ahead of any potential opponent on the battlefield by not merely improving existing systems, but by skipping ahead to new generations of technology: land forces that are lighter but more lethal, air power that can strike across long distances, and naval power that packs a bigger punch in smaller platforms.

Governor Bushs Proposals for a Strong National Defense
Governor Bush will set three goals for our nations defense.

1. To Renew the Bond of Trust Between the President and the Military, Governor Bush will:
# Respect the tradition and culture of the military.
# Increase by $1 billion a year the recently enacted military pay raise to encourage the best and brightest to enlist and reenlist.
# Renovate substandard military housing and improve military training.
# Maintain longstanding U.S. commitments, but order an immediate review of overseas deployments in dozens of countries, with the aim of replacing uncertain missions with well-defined objectives.

2. To Defend the American Homeland, Governor Bush will:
# Deter terrorist attacks by ensuring that every group or nation understands that if they sponsor such attacks, the U.S. response will be devastating.
# Deploy national and theater anti-ballistic missile defenses, as soon as possible.
# Reduce the number of American nuclear weapons to the lowest possible number consistent with our national security.
# Strengthen our intelligence communitys ability to detect terrorist threats, and develop long-range strike capabilities to eliminate threats before they arise.
# Promote cooperation with our allies, who should share the burden of defense.

3. To Begin to Create the Military of the Future, Governor Bush will:
# Order a comprehensive military review to develop a new architecture for American defense to meet the challenges of the next century.
# Seize the opportunity to skip a generation of weapons, not merely improving existing systems, but replacing them with a new generation of technology: land forces that are lighter but more lethal, air power manned or unmanned that can strike across long distances, and naval power that packs a bigger punch in smaller platforms.
# Encourage a spirit of innovation and experimentation within the military.
# Earmark at least 20 percent of the procurement budget for acquisition programs that propel America generations ahead in military technology.
# Increase defense R&D spending by at least $20 billion from FY2002 to FY2006.

Health Care and the Uninsured

Strengthen S-CHIP: Governor Bush supports lifting restrictions on state flexibility so that States have the freedom to implement creative solutions for expanded coverage of the uninsured under S-CHIP. His Administration will work in partnership with states not act as a roadblock to state innovation.

PS: we americans are fucking morons and don't deserve better than this. We voted for Bush because:

1. He was a guy you 'can have a beer with'
2. He represented republican values. You know the ones, things like upholding the constitution; a balanced budget; humble foreign policy; freedom from government tyranny; defending the nation from foreign enemies; etc.
3. He wanted to restore integrity and trust to the white house.
4. His inability to speak properly made him relatable.

We get the democracy we deserve. And we deserved Bush. Maybe it'll be a wakeup call. Todays generation of youth is the most politically active since the 60s. Had it not been for Bush most of us would still be asleep and indifferent.

5. The federal government is expected to run a surplus of nearly $5 trillion during the next ten years.
Edited on Mon Jul-07-08 08:09 PM by uppityperson
bwahahahahahaha. crying here. A few tidbits (edited because I missed one):

Governor Bush believes a strong leader focuses on solving problems, not settling scores.

Governor Bush has a strong record of bipartisan leadership, uniting people behind common goals. (more people than ever hate him and what he has done)

Governor Bush believes that American foreign policy must be more than the management of crisis. It must have a great and guiding goal: to turn this time of American influence into generations of democratic peace. This is accomplished by concentrating on enduring national interests and by resisting the temptation to withdraw from the world.

No Isolationism: America cannot withdraw from the world. American foreign policy cannot be founded on fear

There are 43 million uninsured Americans 4 million more than when the current Administration took office. Governor Bush will reverse this trend by making health insurance affordable for hard-working, low-income families. His plan will provide them with a $2,000 refundable health credit so that they can choose health plans and physicians that fit their needs. He will also make it easier for small businesses, which employ 60 percent of the uninsured, to obtain lower cost insurance through associations. Finally, Governor Bush will remove federal regulations that restrict state flexibility in designing and implementing programs for the uninsured. Governor Bush will put the consumer, not the government, in charge of health care decisions.

Governor Bush will reform the nations public schools, as he has in Texas, which is one of two states that have made the greatest recent progress in education. He will close the achievement gap, set high standards, promote character education, and ensure school safety. States will be offered freedom from federal regulation, but will be held accountable for results. Performance will be measured annually, and parents will be empowered with information and choices.

Edited on Mon Jul-07-08 08:30 PM by uppityperson
Oh my goodness this stuff is something. so kick again. Edited to add McCain's take on the military problem, and the budget surplus...

Q: What are some of the ways to address this readiness problem?

A: Increase active duty pay and retirement benefits to increase morale and retention. It is unconscionable that nearly 12,000 of our military men and women must rely on food stamps to feed their families. We must stop wasting scarce defense dollars on Cold War relics and parochial projects that don't meet today's national security threats, we must also restructure our forces to meet today's security threats through weapons modernization and training and we must provide adequate funding for compensation, improved sea-lift capabilities and missile defense.

Q: Haven't threats to U.S. national security declined since the end of the Cold War?

A: The nature of threats to our national security are more numerous and complex. Increased nationalist conflicts in Balkans and the former Soviet Union, a resurgent China, a dangerously unstable North Korea, increased proliferation of weapons of mass destruction - from biological to chemical to nuclear - and the rise in worldwide terrorism to name a few, all pose potentially grave threats to U.S. national security.

BUDGET SURPLUS

Q: What should be done with the budget surplus?

A: Many Democrats would like to spend the surplus to expand the federal government - this is wrong. Americans created the surplus, not politicians. Let's use it to make America stronger. My plan for a strong America is to use the surplus to rescue Social Security; save Medicare; pay down national debt and provide desperately needed tax relief for American families, which will keep the economy humming.

10. his 'energy' position is priceless...

Energy
?America must have an energy policy that plans for the future, but meets the needs of today. I believe that we can develop our natural resources and protect our environment. We are paying a steep price for seven and a half years without an energy policy.?

it's all a steaming pile of horse manure...a hollywood script. phony baloney

12. Where are my rental vouchers?
Another great one from the website:

Homeownership
Governor Bush believes homeownership is at the heart of the American Dream. However, the homeownership rate among low-income families and minorities lags behind the national average. Therefore, to increase opportunities for homeownership, Governor Bush will permit government-subsidized renters to aggregate up to a years worth of rental vouchers to fund the down payment on a home. He will also establish a $1 billion American Dream Down Payment Fund to provide matching grants to lenders to help an additional 650,000 low-income families finance the purchase of a first home. Finally, Governor Bush will provide $1.7 billion in investor-based tax credits to encourage the rehabilitation or construction of new, affordable homes in distressed communities.
