It reminded me of the kind of movies I grew up on. There were always ‘regular people’ who occasionally smoked a little pot, who went up against The Elite. Circumstances caused them to have to fight for something: respect, equality, saving their homes from developers.
The bad guys were always the greedy, old money types or secret government agencies that were ruthless in their pursuit of power. The good guys were always average Americans who stood up for themselves against the powerful. Little guys would band together, and fight off what was unfair.
What happened?
Recently my fundie step-mom (who is not wealthy by anyone's standards) was ranting about an upscale community one of her friends worked at (in the sales office). It seems the community is surrounded by apartments, some low income, and the homeowners are aghast that they find local kids in their swimming pool. These kids "hang out" and "cause trouble". She could not mention any other "trouble" besides their swimming, but she was sure there was some stuff she couldn't remember. I laughed and asked her if they homeowners were afraid they would dirty up the water.
Kids swimming in a pool they should know they don't belong in - heavens! I don't think its the pool, I think its the "little people" not recognizing their betters, not knowing their place. We live in Florida - its hot in the summer. I don't know - when I saw Caddyshack it all came back why I found her outrage for some McMansion owners distasteful. Meatballs, The Goonies... they had sort of taught me that being a snob wasn't cool. That we're all the same, no matter what our income.
Again, I ask... what happened??
