America.. A beautiful woman with a dirty neck
Edited on Sat Jun-28-08 02:42 AM by SoCalDem
I heard that phrase used the other day on a documentary..not about US..but the more I thought about it, the more it "fit"..

We have been the "beautiful woman", almost since our inception..... The beautiful woman that all who gazed upon, wanted. She's always been a bit apart from the rabble, even though she grudgingly accepted them when there was dirty work to be done.. The beautiful woman would stand and watch as they toiled..quite apart from her.

All who saw her wanted to be near her, but she only gave the orders from a safe distance.. Her station in life was to be the beacon, the unattainable perfection, and to watch over those who worked in her service, but not to allow actual intimacy.

People from all over worshiped the beautiful woman and sought her counsel..she was happy to give advice and tell others what to do. She never hesitated to tell anyone who would listen, about her generosity and wisdom.

Surely a woman so beautiful and wise would always stay that way.

Over the years, the beautiful woman has let her guard down, and people can now get close to her..the fancy clothes that looked so grand...from a distance..are actually worn and shabby, she smells a bit..and her neck is quite dirty..

3. the fiction/fantasy aspect has been so trumped up
the fantastic aspect of what the USA is/was made up of, made people who might have guarded against the drift towards a brutal police state whose main talent is for lying, more alert guarding against the lies needed to maintain the illusion, but the fight was between good and bad, so it probably was lost even in 1776. The 'reactionaries' are powerful force in any society- even a tiny tribal society. Reactionaries pretend they're concerned with 'the children' the precious juices and all that mom's apple pie stuff; while in reality they oppose any common gains, any effort to let the commons identify with the purpose, have any say in it...the reactionary hogs the control room and schemes to keep the masses downtrodden, because power=knowlege, and thus mass ignorance = stability, somehow. Poverty is good, because the workers then can't pickenchoose, as the gone-into-hiding freeper alan greedspan once boldly stated, in front of buncha rich fat greasy pigs. Lol. The USA had advantages no other nation state ever had, because it had a chance, politically, to marginalize the reactionaries (what does anyone think the bill of rights/constitution are anyway? To defend the richenpowerful from the injuns/slaves or workmen? lol) right from the beginning. The american revolution INSPIRED the French Revolution- how many people know that?
The overwhelming question always remains: how is a massive, powerful armed and capable 'people' kept fighting among themselves so the idiocratic powerful can rule by default, with their mass media keeping it quiet, nudge wink? Now we're touching upon Marxism, and upon stuff Aristotle and Plato discussed, and even the bible tried to warn us about. Evil=death, in the end...period. And evil will win. Why? idunno...

5. A beautiful woman with a dirty neck

Wordpress.com

This is the image that came to my mind reading that metaphor. This woman is not beautiful in the sense that Miss America or the Playboy centerfold is beautiful, but she is beautiful like America is beautiful.

She is mother: ever nurturing and bountiful.

She is brave: ready to face an uncertain future with its hard challenges.

She is industrious: ready to do hard work to provide for her family, and the work gives her a dirty neck.

She is pensive: her thoughts go beyond her own self-interest, to the welfare of her family and her community.

She is hopeful: her life is difficult today, but she will survive and bring her children to a better tomorrow.

I'll take her beauty to that of Miss America and the Playboy centerfold, thank you.

7. Sorry to disillusion you...
but 'America' is a PIMP from an worn-out Old World that wanted a beautiful New World to rape and pillage.

9. "A beautiful woman with a dirty face" was once said about Savannah, GA.
That was before decades of historic preservation.
