A reason to dislike "Da Bears"
I just saw "The Worst Person in the World" segment on Olbermann's show and was made aware of some idiot(s) who hung a sign out which said, "The Bears. Finishing what Katrina Started". Now I know that most Bears fans are not like that, because around here, there are a lot of them. But the management of the bears did not make the person(s) take the sign down and that is unacceptable. I must admit that I am biased as I am not a bear's fan (GO PACK), but c'mon, there is absolutely no excuse for actions like that sign. None. The Soldier Field people or the bear's management or some other fans, should have ordered the assholes to remove that offensive sign or risk either ejection, or a beating to within an inch of their lives. So for a Super Bowl pick, I say GO COLTS!

22. Well, it is where did Leo Strauss taught Wolfowitz the insane
rationale that freedom leads to chaos and that providing simple ideologies of overblown national esteem is a necessary part of governing. So it wouldn't be the first NeoCon in Chicago.

46. "The Merits" are that this administration's policies...
...are based in a warped ideology that is intellectually dishonest, morally bankrupt, socially repugnant and in a word:

DEAD.

Read it again ==> Conservatism is dead.

Bush and his criminal stooges killed of what was left of it after Reagan began it's death song.

68. They won't speak it, but it is very much a part of the assumptions of their philosophy
Strauss made those assumptions explicit in his work. This is why neocons promote authoritarian policies, Big Brother snooping, unitary executives, and a culture that worships military conquest. They have coopted libertarian language in public (you've likely sat in on one of their propaganda sessions), but pursue authoritarian policies in practice. The father figure must always protect the "weak people" from "existential threats".

69. Then you should read up on Leo Strauss
The Straussians believe that people aren't sophisticated enough to govern themselves nor to have the truth told to them in order to make informed decisions. The elite should govern the masses as they see fit.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leo_Strauss

Shadia Drury, author of 1999's Leo Strauss and the American Right, argues that Strauss ... inculcated an elitist strain in American political leaders that is linked to imperialist militarism and Christian fundamentalism. Drury accuses Strauss of teaching that "perpetual deception of the citizens by those in power is critical because they need to be led, and they need strong rulers to tell them what's good for them."

I think that pretty much means that Straussians don't believe in what we recognize as a free society.

"Fsck the Eagles" is a comment, however puerile, on the team. The above atrocity kicks the whole city when it's down. Maybe if it had said "Hey Philly, why did you stop with the MOVE block?" or something, it'd be equivalent.

And while I don't really have a dog in this show - since the Steelers didn't quite make it this year - I say good luck Bears. Just make it a close game and I'm happy.

31. Well,
I think the team had a lot more to do than monitor signs.

Secondly - I had to go get my pizza (needed desperately to watch the games) in a Packers bar - every single person there wearing Saints garb.

Clearly no love lost between the Packer and Bear fans - fine with me - I just wanted the pizza.

Steelers weren't playing - or I guarantee you my wife would have been picking up that pizza.

57. The sign wasn't on the field!
They don't need to stop the game to go into the stands and take a sign down! Or was it even in the stands? It may have been outside the seating area.

Are you telling me that every time someone in the stadium get rowdy and security officers break it up they stop the game????

That is PRIVATE PROPERTY and the owners have a right to take down offensive signs.

The players would not even have noticed! No one is saying the game should have been stopped. Where did that come from?

58. It did appear on FOX in the broadcast - from the field.
And you bet - the players certainly did NOT notice it all.

And you are right that the owners had a right - but I am also saying they were a lot more concerned about what was happening on the field at the time.

Doesn't make it right - but you know, a lot of peopele are jerks - and apparently some of the jerks live in Chicago.

Bears will still win though.

Maybe I miss your question in this.

34. Um, what "classless running up of Da Score" ???
Were the Bears defensive players supposed to give those fumbles and interceptions back???

Whoever that classless moran is that made that sign obviously thinks Rush Limpballs is a god. He even resembles him.

As I said in another thread, there are morans everywhere. I honestly don't think the people working security at Soldier Field check posters brought into the game for "political correctness" and I think the management of the Bears team yesterday had a little more on their minds than what one poster said hanging on the sidelines...

Hell, last night here on DU one poster, a Packer fan, suggested that maybe this Super Bowl should be the one where there is a "terrorist attack". Nice, huh!!!

That being said though, I do apologize for the actions of one totally classless Bear fan. If I had seen that poster or the person holding it, I'd probably be in jail right now.

Some stupid fan doesn't represent the Bears.

It's a tough pick for me. Lovie Smith was the Defensive Coordinator here in St. Louis before he moved to Chicago and I liked him a lot. I'm also happy to see Chicago doing well after having a tough time of it over the past years.

But I guess I'm rooting for Indy too. My reason is about as profound as yours though. My main reason is that I love Tony Dungy. I think he is hands down one of the classiest men out there and I enjoy watching classy people succeed in their lives.

51. If someone had put up a "McCaskey is a pedophile" sign, it would
have come down in about 5 nanoseconds, I can assure everyone!

59. It'll be great in 100-200 years time
when future generations look back upon our tume with revulsion at our sports *heroes*, our barbaric athletics and our misplaced attentions in the same manner many people today apply 21st century morals and moder belief systems to people of previous centuries.

But regarding sports affilitations, does it matter? Brett Favre can't act.

66. all teams have idiot fans
I actually am a long-time fan of the Washington Redskins. But if you want you can dig up plenty of "reasons" to hate them- racist name, Repubs love Skins games, asshole owner, ect... but don't jump on a team or town for one incredibly stupid sign. If it came down to that Indianapolis is not that far from where the KKK was founded. You don't think there are some stupid racist Colt fans too?:eyes:

71. The team isn't responsible for the people that support them.
Considering how bad they sucked for so long, they were happy to have any supporters, even if they were cannibals. Seriously, though, it's not the team's fault some asshole made that sign, and that idiot doesn't represent every Bear fan, or even the average one.

72. That is bad, but then I had a bad run-in with Bears fans once
I went to a Vikings - Bears game (Vikes lost) a few years ago when the Bears were playing in Champaign, IL at UIUC while Soldier Field was being renovated. My husband and I were walking down the sidewalk when a bunch of drunk, college-aged Bears fans surrounded us (me in a Vikings shirt) and started taunting us and calling me everything under the sun (bitch was a favorite). We tried to keep walking but they wouldn't let us. Eventually they left. I was so embarrassed for UIUC (where I was a grad student at the time) and was glad it wasn't a Vikings fan from out of town -- imagine what they might think.

Unfortunately, I saw many Bears fans acting like complete assholes during the few months the Bears played in Champaign.

75. Don't Hang That On Me
I've been Bear fan since the early 60's. I sure don't have that sort of sentiment. I do, however, agree that such a sign was worthy of an ejection from the stadium.

76. Wow! I'm SHOCKED! SHOCKED I say! A Packer Fan trying to take away the GLORY of the BEARS Super Bowl
game! What a bullshit post. That sign is DISGUSTING. It should never have been allowed, but to blame the Bears for what one of their idiotic fans did is preposterous.

So typical of a Packer Fan. The Bears deserve to be in the Super Bowl because they WON...UNLIKE the Packers...I know, that's a hard one for a Packer Fan to swallow, but GET OVER IT!:grr: Sheesh. Now I've seen everything.:grr:

GO BEARS!!!!!
