Elliot D. Cohen: POW/MIA Families Alleged McCain Assault: Senate Ethics Committee Failed to Investigate

A BUZZFLASH GUEST CONTRIBUTION
by Elliot D. Cohen

On June 20, 1996, Senator John McCain allegedly assaulted a family member of a Vietnam War prisoner of war (POW) who was missing in action (MIA), as a group of about 15 family members of POW/MIAs watched in astonishment. Within about one month, five ethics complaints had been filed with the Senate Ethics Committee by five eyewitnesses. But the Senate Ethics Committee refused to investigate the matter.

................

These family members of POW/MIAs had come to speak with McCain to try to convince him to leave the law alone. Mrs. Hrdlicka gives the following description of what happened:

When he (McCain) realized who we were, his face turned red and he became enraged. He would not accept the letters we had brought, he burst through our group assaulting the niece of Jane Duke Gaylor, mother of a MIA. I followed Senator McCain down the hall asking that he leave the legislation alone and all the while he is denying that he knew anything about the Missing Personnel Act. ...As we reached the elevator he said to me that I didn't know what he had been through ... I then stated I understood what he had been through and David Hrdlicka was still going through it. I had the capture picture of my husband and tried to show the picture to him but he would not look at it. ...The elevator arrived and Senator McCain quickly jumped in -- that ended our conversation. After this incident we went to the Capitol Police and filed a report. We also sent complaints to the ethics committee on the Senator's behavior.

"He went from a smiling, congenial, happy face to a beet red, totally enraged face in an instant," she said. "I have never seen a senator act in this way. We were all dumbfounded how this happened. He threw his arm up, and she goes flying and Jane (who was in a wheelchair) gets pushed aside as he brushes by her. All I see is people flying and I'm behind him (McCain)... This was assault."

4. i SMELL campaign commercial by a 527 even if Obama doesn't want it
that kind of person cannot be allowed to enter the white house - dumbass was bad enough - an angry unruly hateful man like McCain is even worse and more warmongering...

I have friends and family who are handicapped, and to think anyone would do things like this to them, esp. an elderly woman in a wheelchair just makes me despise them.

6. Leave that shit to "Vietnam Veterans Against John McCain"
It'll be fun to see the shitbirds who trashed John Kerry in 2004 devour their own kind.

8. there was a LONG thread on this recently, and that woman
was affiliated with the Sampley people. I think I came down on McCain's side on this one, for lack of credible evidence, much as I wanted to see some proof of McCain's public craziness

maybe somebody can come up with that thread

I hate not being able to tell which is which, but how do you know whom to believe in cases like this?

Cynthia McKinney, anyone?

7. "But the Senate Ethics Committee refused to investigate the matter."
This refusal needs a citation. Did the SEC issue a statement refusing to investigate, or did they investigate and find no truth to the alleged assault?
These internet allegations, whether against us or against them, are usually bogus.

9. According to the article
the Senate Ethics Committee refused to investigate the incident, claiming that an "alleged" assault was more properly a matter for the police and not the ethics committee.

From the article:

"...An August 2, 1996 letter to Hrdlicka from the Senate Ethics Committee stated, "To the extent that your complaint appears to relate to alleged physical acts, it would appear that appropriate action has been taken by informing the Capitol Police of the alleged incident. Thus, based upon the information which you have provided, no further action is intended with respect to this matter. ..."

11. Watch this video and then try and tell me that this incident didn't happen.
There is no way in hell that I think this incident didn't happen.
John McCain is famous for having a bad temper.

Watch this video and look at the way McCain glares at this woman testifying before the Senate select committee that he was on -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CazKanlYDg

McCain just glowers at this woman - you can see the hate and the rage welling up in him toward her simply because she didn't want that subcommittee to stop looking for MIAs or POWs of the Vietnam War.

This video is from 1992, when Bush senior was President.

This is the most dispicable treatment of a United States citizen by a sitting US Senator that I have ever seen in my entire life.

15. wow...
I hope Veterans come out in full force against him becoming president, as anti-troop, anti-recovery, anti-decency. With all of his anger towards people who wanted to keep looking is shown, and his clear anger issues being reported - I would hope the Vets of this country organize and make commercials that decry him. They let those bastards attack Kerry on national TV ad spots, Vets who are friends of the missing, or who have dealt with McCain, should be allowed to have their comments aired nationally also!

16. By the way, why is McCain so angry over this issue?
Does he really have clear reasons for getting upset over this and other issues that seem to set him off? I would think he would be extremely supportive of the families of MIAs. Or does he just get plain angry at times for no apparent reason, flying off into nonsensical rages like Donald Duck? I wish that some psychologists could examine old video footage of him and try to analyze what's going on in this man's head, the way some tried to do with El Chimpo.

14. what I just sent out to people in email - we need to get these stories out!!!
http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/contributors/1670

As a family member of someone who is handicapped, and seeing how poorly some people treat that loved one, and having other friends with handicaps or loved ones who are handicapped, I've heard of McCain's anger - but now we're gettingeven more proof of it.

In '96, John McCain was directly accused by FIVE people of assault, for barreling his way through about 10-15 family members of a missing US soldier, who were in D.C. to try to talk to him on not voting to change the Missing In Action/Prisoner Of War law, that would effect the pursuit of trying to return their family member still in Vietnam. McCain pushed his way through the crowd, refusing to even look at the photo that the MIA's mother in the wheelchair was trying to show him.
Red-faced and hostile, he sent the ladies flying and shoved the elderly lady in the wheelchair (the mother of the MIA) out of the way. The House Ethics committee received 5 filed complaints and refused to investigate.... (see the full story above if you want to read the lady's detailed account who was standing behind McCain as he pushed through).

In FURTHER proof of him being unfit to be president, Ross Perot has spoken about McCain's choice to ignore the left behind in Vietnam (see Newsweek link below).

The other report I've seen is two reporters saying that, in the 90's also, he blew his top at his wife who swept his thinning hair aside and said to him in front of the reporters interviewing him, 'you're getting pretty thin up there', and he snapped at her, "at least I don't pile on the makeup like a trollup - you C***".

A Baptist minister asked him, in poor wording, in front of a town hall meeting about the incident and he avoided it by saying there were people present who did not want to hear that kind of talk, which I understand, as the minister should have worded the question more discreetly and respectfully (Baptists and their bluntness!).

McCain talks about his 'temper' in interviews I've seen, but all I know is I don't want a guy in office sending people into battle because he's a hothead, or near the nuke button - when he shows that kind of anger and hostility towards the handicapped.

I would like to see further reports on this, or direct interviews with the people involved in these different events. Especially Ross Perot.

http://www.rawstory.com/news/2008/McCain_temper_boiled_over_in_92_0407.html (book about McCain's calling Cindy the 'C' word)

For all the ridiculously lie-filled anti-Obama email forwards out there - it's good to send out something with substance, with REAL people stating what happened to them involving McCain.
