SNL this Saturday will air premier episode from '75 hosted by George Carlin
As a tribute to George Carlin, Saturday Night Live will air it's first episode from 1975 with its first host, Carlin. So along with Carlin we will have the fun of seeing the original "Not Ready for Prime Time" players including John Belushi, Dan Ackroyd, Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner and Jane Curtain.

that was one of the strongest episodes ever, which included by FAR the best opening monologue ever, in which Pryor describes doing acid.

24. cool! I used to have that on tape and it was awesome...
SNL had a whole series of "Best of" on VHS from the first cast, which is how this 26-year-old growing up overseas was able to be properly introduced to SNL (and George Carlin) at age 10. Thanks to those tapes, I've always felt a little out of step with people my age, because while they were laughing about Will Ferrell doing a parody of Harry Carey (I love Will Ferrell, but that was just stupid), I would think, "Ugh, these guys have never heard Garret Morris sing, 'I'm gonna get me a shotgun and kill all the whiteys I see! Then I'm gonna find me a white woman who's wearin' a navy-blue sweataaahhh!!!'" You'd never see something like that nowadays--don't even think about the "N*gger/Dead Honky" sketch between Chevy Chase and Richard Pryor!

If I'm not mistaken, one of the ad parodies on that episode was for the Gilette three-blade razor (I guess the dual-blade razor had just come out). "The three-blade razor: because you'll believe anything." I remember it because it was so funny (and sad) that we have come to have the Gilette Fusion Extreme or whatever it is which has five blades! (Four front, one back).

I don't think Chapelle's Show would ever be shown on network television. Maybe late-night programming by random local stations, but NBC Universal (if it owned Chapelle's Show) wouldn't play any of it on their regular schedule.

Carlin wanted to wear a t-shirt, but the network wanted him to wear a suit. As a compromise, Carlin wore a vest and jacket over his t-shirt, and hosted the show while reportedly stoned out of his mind.

Note: Carlin only appears on stage to perform stand-up or introduce the evening's musical guests.

I used to do that to my former boss in staff meetings. I'd sit in the back of the room and make Chevy Chase faces while some of the more pretentious staff members were talking. My boss would see me and start laughing and everyone would wonder why she was laughing but when they looked at me I'd be all sweet and innocent. Good times.

57. NBC could show both of the episodes Mr. Carlin hosted.
Contrary to what Tom Shales and James Andrew Miller claimed in their SNL history book, Mr. Carlin did host a second time during the strike-shortened 1984-85 season (the year dominated by Billy Crystal and Martin Short).

After all, does NBC really have to show another episode of Poker After Dark like they do every other night?
