19,000 acres burn in Mendocino County (Northern California)

About 19,000 acres of Mendocino County had been blackened by noon Tuesday as 120 fires raged for a second day, spewing a thick layer of unhealthy smoke across the region.

However, the biggest fire was in neighboring Lake County, were crews were battling the 9,000-acre Walker Ridge fire near the Colusa County line.

Smoke from the fires spurred health alerts, and residents were being urged to avoid outdoor activity.

Prevailing winds were bringing smoke south into Sonoma County, although concentrations were not at critical levels.
