Update on son in law suicide attempt
Edited on Tue Jun-24-08 10:52 AM by flamin lib
From this thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=3507758&mesg_id=3507758

When the police searched his apartment they found a note which they are holding until some later date and the receipt for the Tylenol. It was time stamped at 7:30 the morning of the attempt so the Tylenol had only been in his system 3-4 hours and there was some vomiting so the full 150 tablet dose was lessened somewhat. This news brightened his outlook considerably over the original estimate of 10 hours of toxicity.

Test results continue to be positive, so unless there is a turn for the worse I'll not post further news.

Thanks to all for the support and positive thoughts, they really do mean a lot even if they are only black marks on a phosphor screen.

Edit to add:

He's conscious! Happy that he wasn't successful, repentant for hurting everyone and showing all good signs of being able to recover from the emotional as well as physical stress.

30. Well, then, I guess my ex-wife falls on the other side of the fence
Edited on Tue Jun-24-08 06:46 PM by tavalon
Luckily, each time she tries, the effect on the rest of us is that much less. It helps that I'm no longer the one finding her after her attempts. Two of those was quite enough for me.

2. Send my good thoughts his way.
Tylenol is an ugly one to OD on. Liver failure is not a peaceful way to go.

4. hang in there ...
your son-in-law must have been in a pretty bad state to take that action. it's going to be a long tough recovery ahead, he's got a lot of mental and physical healing to do. i really hope your family has the support needed to get through this crisis. That's what government is supposed to do, help us get back on our feet ... or am i expecting too much?

9. Thank God!
I knew someone who committed suicide by ingesting an entire bottle of Tylenol. It took him two weeks to die. Of course, he had been addicted to alcohol and other drugs for most of his life, so his liver couldn't handle the toxicity. When I read your first post about it, I thought it was going to be very bad news. I'm so glad he's recovering!

13. great news--maybe he'll get a chance to try that Sam-E supplement idea
someone on your other thread mentioned iSame-E has great clinical results on reversing liver damage from drug toxicity.

Good luck!

14. I'm glad with you for the good news
and I'm so sorry that your family has had to suffer all that it was suffered up to this point. It may be a little trite to quote "At the end of the storm is a golden morn and the sweet silver sight of the dawn. Walk on... Walk on with hope in your heart..." but I do hope that everyone in your family comes to see that "sweet silver sight of the dawn" very soon.

Thanks for the update, that is just wonderful!

However, no matter how repentant he is nor how many good signs he shows towards recovery -- please, encourage him to get help for the longer term. When problems get that bad for someone, they are in need of it. IMO.

21. Hello Flamin lib
I was going to post this on your first thread this morning, but decided not to. I haven't thought about this for a long time...

I tried the same thing when I was 17, swallowed an entire bottle of Tylenol, and had to stay in the hospital for a few days. I was lucky and didn't have any permanent liver damage.

But the point of my post is to say that I remember telling people whatever they wanted to hear afterwards.. "Yes, I was stupid for trying that", "No, I won't ever do it again". In my head, though, I didn't want to be around anyone, I was confused why it didn't work, and I was angry.

Hopefully this event is over for you both, but do keep an eye on him, even if spirits are up, and he's communicating.

25. Ty PM is full of benadryl...
so he won't be itchy for awhile, anyway.

I pray that this near-death experience has shocked him back to where he needs to be emotionally and mentally. I've seen it happen. It's possible. The Docs can help him learn to cope short-term. Give it time...he may grow from this awful experience. Bless y'all.

Your original post stuck with me last night. I didn't respond, but I couldn't help wondering and worrying about your family - even though I don't know you. I was hoping that his situation would improve and he could overcome this disaterous trend that more and more people find themselves in. I'm very happy for you and your family.

Hey Flamin Lib,
My good friends daughter, who was very young, tried the same thing last year. Livers can regenerate. Thats what I hear any way. So there is hope.

38. That is good news. Thanks for the update.
I hope things continue to turn around for your son-in-law.

I read an article once about people who tried to commit suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge and survived. (It doesn't happen very often.) Several of them reported that as soon as they had jumped off that bridge, they realized all their horrible problems were solvable and that they had just made the biggest mistake ever. I hope your son-in-law had the same epiphany.

Physical pain on top of the mental and emotional pain would be awful. I hope they've done a psych consult and have him talking it out.
