Not every ejaculation deserves a name

RIP George. He was one of the greatest comics I've ever seen. The only other one who even came close was Rodney Dangerfield.

I'm just heartbroken over this news. I'm a fan of comedy. I actually have written a couple jokes for comics - good ones. Losing Carlin is just crushing.

Nobody I can think of is still doing standup from his generation. David Steinberg is probably the closest thing, but he's never thrilled me like Carlin did.

He was the ulimate professional comic. Good bye, George.

1. Lenny Bruce & Woody Allen & a few others preceded Carlin in that kind style of humor. Carlin
perfected observational humor.

7. Yup
but Lenny Bruce died and Woody went on to other things.

Carlin did standup. For 40 plus fucking years, and he stayed at the top. Nobody will ever match that.

9. I love Lewis Black
I've seen him a few times, and I've met him. I adore him.

But I'm talking about what makes a comic succeed for 40-plus years. Carlin had it. Few others do.

6. I think Eddie Izzard is a better comedian.
But the styles are so many worlds apart it's impossible to actually compare them. Carlin was brilliant in a biting, caustic way. Izzard is brilliant is a more playful, thinking way. Both arrive at truths through totally different avenues. In the end it's just a matter of taste. Both have influenced my own humor and general attitude a lot (as did Dangerfield).

I suspect that Izzard would laugh at me for saying he's better than Carlin though, as I suspect many of you will too. ;)

10. Oh, I agree that Carlin has had a far bigger impact across generations.
I'm just talking about who makes me laugh the hardest. I've seen stuff by Carlin through the 90's that was so-so. He seemed to regain his edge when his wife died, and that mixture of sadness and anger seemed to fuel his later stuff, which was as biting as ever.

I don't see Izzard ever making the impact Carlin did, partly because Izzard's stuff is too damn intelligent and meandering for many to even follow, whereas Carlin was able to make a point about basic truths in quick, rapid fire ways that drove the point home more effectively. Plus, Izzard talks funny and dresses like a woman, never a sure fire path to popularity in America. :)

And you're one lucky person to be seeing him, dammit!!! x(

12. No way Izzard would take this comment seriously.
He's good enough to know who was the reigning King.
