be breaking down perfectly good doors in Cedar City to "see if homes are safe," before letting the people that own the fucking house go home to open the fucking door with a key? I think it's bullshit myself. Safe my ass.

3. They are checking for structural stability
and at times you need to get INSIDE the structure to do that... which all on its own can lead to you becoming a victim

Now the people who usually do this are fire personnel and especially briefed peace officers

Why you need to have the NG in place... the practice attracts looters but it also prevents tragedies

Speaking as an emergency worker here

4. I know...couldn't help myself. my sister lives in Cedar Rapids
she's told me about that exact sort of thing happening, and it's heartbreaking.

her job leads her to deal in a very intimate manner with cops, mostly, btw, so I know both sides of that story, from somebody who's there every day.

I just had a little water in my basement, which could end up costing me several grand, due to condo incompetence, and have spent hours and hours cleaning up, getting ready for them to maybe come in and finish the job they started, then abandoned. I can do it myself, cause I used to do it for a living, but I sure don't feel like it.

point is, I empathize with both sides, but can't imagine just how horrible it's got to be for those people, many/most of whom are going to find their homes declared uninhabitable, and possibly not even be allowed to return for what is now detritus.

that's just the tip of the iceberg, and she's going to be dealing with the ramifications for a long time, in an official capacity, not to mention as a neighbor/friend who've lost everything

6. You and I know the consequences
they are saying billions in damage, been looking at topo maps and all that happy horse and I estimate will go into at least a trillion

And that is just the physical stuff...

I am not even counting on the PTSD for the cops and other responders

Nor the one for the neighbors.

And at this point all these folks need help

Oh wait a great newsman died :sarcasm:

7. You are exercising thinking. It is a skill that is not a characteristic
of"in charge" folks.

9. Lots Of Dangers In A Waterlogged House
Several reasons for emergency workers to have access to houses. First, is to make sure there aren't elderly or injured people inside. While one would hope that neighbors check up on neighbors, that's not always the case and, as we saw in NOLA, it could have fatal results.

There's also the threats of gas or other chemical leaks. All it takes is one spark and a neighborhood could go up in a hurry...the water is loaded with oil and other flamable solvents.

10. I saw that in yesterday's USA Today.
Just another sign Americans are violent, jackbooted thugs.

11. Nothing but the continued militarization of police dept's going on
They did the same thing in Windsor, Colo., after the recent tornado. Full on fucking troopified fascist thug coppers not letting residents into their own neighborhood...detaining people for trying to go to their own houses which hadn't been within miles of the tornado, etc. America is over.

13. I think they want to go in and snoop and see what they can fill their fucking pockets with and
let the homeowners believe it washed away, blew away, walked away whatever, especially in the situation you described.
