Jason Mattera of College Republicans defends Coulter by calling Edwards a "girly man."
Good Lord where did these obnoxious mind numbing young people come from? On the same show Rich Lowry was defending her as well because it was a slur no one older than 12 would use.

They loves them some Ann Coulter, they really do.

Jason Mattera is the spokeman of the "Young America's Foundation", which is a lavishly funded effort from right wing millionaires to indocterinate and develop the next generation of ultra-conservative leaders. YAF is nationwide and spends tens of millions of dollars on recruiting and organizing young conservatives and sponsoring seminars, etc.
http://theinsidedope.blogspot.com/2005_08_07_theinsidedope_archive.html

The next generation of conservative leaders? Lord help us all.

Fox hosted Lowry, Mattera to defend, downplay Coulter's homophobic slur

Mattera claimed that Coulter "was making a joke not about homosexuality, or calling John Edwards a fag," but was instead "pointing out that political correctness stifles speech." Mattera later claimed that Coulter was, in fact, making a joke about Edwards, but that "she was basically calling John Edwards a wuss, that he was a girlie-man, and that if he were elected president he would probably embolden Al Qaeda to attack us," adding that Coulter "knows how to communicate a message to an audience, especially to college students, and she got rousing -- rousing applause and rousing standing ovations throughout the event."

Be sure to view the video as well.

I wonder if he is a graduate of the Leadership Council like Karl Rove and Jeff Gannon.

The GOP's "controlled controversy"...outrageous enough to make us angry. Deliberate.

33. calling Edwards a fag is even more non-sensical, though...
At least Obama actually is black, so she'd would be using a "correct" epithet for him.

Edwards isn't even gay and hasn't ever been accused of such, so not only was this bigoted, it was just totally out of nowhere and a total non-sequitur. If it had been Al Gore, who has been made fun of for having a bit of a lisp and slightly effeminate manner (not agreeing with it, just saying that it's been a common parody), it would at least make some sense.

But with Edwards it's just totally random.

I think a better analogy would be if she had called Edwards a nigger, since that makes as much sense as calling him a fag.

47. John Edwards is a very good-looking man,
and that's ALL this is about. They are trying to turn a natural asset into a liability, because they're Repukes and that's what they do. This is nothing more than swiftboating, just a little more cheesy and juvenile than usual (if that's even possible).

50. yeah, I get what you're saying... :-)
Kerry was a well-decorated war hero, so they try to make it a liability by saying, "Well, he only got those Purple Hearts because he shot himself!"

John Edwards is good-looking and well-spoken, but "he's only like that because he's a closet homo!"

54. Al Gore never ever seemed effiminate to me ever
It also was NOT a common parody - that he was wooden was and the pedantic way he spoke was.

Maureen Dowd seems the source of that - and she seems to have accused many Democrats of that.

It is beyond sleasy that in defending Edwards from a stupid baseless claim by saying it would make more sense to say it of another Democrat.

57. never did to me, either...
I think you're taking the wrong meaning when I say it "makes sense." I didn't mean, "Oh, I can see what they're getting at, etc." but rather that it references an already-established "theme" about someone (and Gore having a slight lisp and being effeminate, etc., is one of the ones I've seen--it's really stupid, of course, but it's been out there).

Calling someone who's black a nigger "makes sense" in that the person hurling the epithet is using a term that commonly corresponds to blacks (mind you, I said "makes sense" and not "is justified"). I'm white, and if someone called me a spear chucker, I don't know whether I'd be more insulted or confused--the person's labeling me with a racial epithet and is meaning to insult me, but I'm not even a member of that race, so why did they think that would be the term to use, instead of something that actually corresponds to white people?

I wasn't assigning a value judgment to either (ie. calling someone a fag is worse than calling someone a nigger, etc.), but that Ann Coulter is so nuts, she throws around epithets that just don't even correspond to the person she's hurling them at. Like calling a Italian a chink, or something--it's still an epithet and shows the person to be a bigot, but it also just doesn't even make sense. Or taunting a very thin person with "hey, fatty!"

I don't really see how I was being "sleazy." Obviously I didn't state my point clearly enough, but I certainly wasn't saying it would've been better or less condemnable if Ann Coulter had called Obama a nigger instead of Edwards a faggot.

Besides, it was just a little offside comment to argue that Coulter is both a bigot and just plain nuts. I wasn't trying to lessen her comments or say I'd have no problem if it had been a comment about someone who actually is gay like Barney Frank, for instance.

11. Gulinani, Bush, and Cheney Real Girlie Men
I am so sorry to insult women and girls by using their sex in the same line as Gulinani, Bush, and Cheney. I know it is the greatest insult that could be leveled against women and girls; however, I could not think of anything else. Anyway, at least our men do not blame their affairs on their wives, by claiming that they only reason they had an affair was that their wives were mean to them and screamed at them. In addition, at least our guys do not call for wars and encourage young men and women to go to those wars, but then when they are asked say that the war is not for them to fight. The Republican Party is the party with the real girlie men. To the women and girls I am so sorry to insult you, but I could not think of anything else. Hopefully you will find it in your hearts to forgive me.

Are the most craven, sycophantic little pansies ever to defile the earth with their presence. During my college years, they were the loudest squealers when anything offended their delicate sensibilities, and they were the fastest runners from military service or any other sort of duty. There was one guy who told me his way of supporting the troops in Iraq was buying at least three DVDs each week so the economy would stay healthy. John Edwards could kick the shit out of this guy and all his friends, but I don't think he'd want to sully his shoe.

"Young America’s Foundation Student Conference Bans Progressive Reporters
Starting July 30, the Young America’s Foundation – which “specializes in helping young people advance conservative ideas” – will host the The National Conservative Student Conference.

Julie Siegel, a staff member at the Daily Pennsylvanian at UPenn, contacted YAF and asked for credentials to cover the convention on behalf of CampusProgress.org, the student publication at the Center for American Progress.

YAF’s spokesman Jason Mattera, who describes himself as “the surprisingly fresh face of conservatism,” denied her request:

Our event is open to real members of the press. You will not receive press credentials. My advice for you is to watch it on C-SPAN. If you have a problem with that decision, you can complain to the Foundation’s media department spokesman. Oh wait…that’s…me. :)

Isn't he clever and cute?

Here are the speakers at that conference.

"Your valor has not gone unnoticed. You became a conservative superstar when you created a "whites only scholarship" at Roger Williams University. More people know your name than the names of those who were killed in Iraq that very same day, Michael M. Merila, Christopher M. Taylor, and Nichole M. Frye. If you'd had gone to Iraq, you'd be as forgotten as they are.

Yes, you could sign up for the war you demanded that your peers fight, but instead, you choose to stand and fight to end the oppression of white people. It is a noble calling. If young men like you failed to heed its call, white people everywhere would continue to languish under the heavy boot of diversity. Thank God you chose the more difficult path."

And J.C. General also covered the righteous leader of the College Republicans...pictures.

60. Greenwald perfectly described the Coulter phenomenon
Coulter plays a vital and irreplaceable role in this movement. The reason I linked to that Bob Somerby post on Maureen Dowd yesterday is because he makes the critical point -- one which Digby, among others, has been making for a long time, including in a great post last night -- concerning how the right-wing movement conducts itself and the rhetorical tool they use not only to keep themselves in power, but more importantly, to keep their needy, confused, and scared base feeling strong and protected. As Digby put it:

The underlying premise of the modern conservative movement is that the entire Democratic party consists of a bunch of fags and dykes who are both too effeminate and too masculine to properly lead the nation. Coulter says it out loud. Dowd hints at it broadly. And the entire press corps giggles and swoons at this shallow, sophomoric concept like a bunch of junior high pom pom girls.

Coulter insisted last night that she did not intend the remark as an anti-gay slur -- that she did not intend to suggest that John Edwards, husband and father, was gay -- but instead only used the word as a "schoolyard taunt," to call him a sissy. And that is true. Her aim was not to suggest that Edwards is actually gay, but simply to feminize him like they do with all male Democratic or liberal political leaders.

For multiple reasons, nobody does that more effectively or audaciously than Coulter, which is why they need her so desperately and will never jettison her. How could they possibly shun her for engaging in tactics on which their entire movement depends? They cannot, which is why they are not and will not.

The converse of this is equally true. As critical as it is to them to feminize Democratic and liberal males (and to masculinize the women), even more important is to create false images of masculine power and strength around their authority figures. The reality of this masculine power is almost always non-existent. The imagery is what counts.

63. it appears that repub women don't mind being the butt of at least half the insults that come
out of the mouths of repukes. i mean, it seems that every other day repukes hurl some "insult" at dems that (cover your ears) compares them to women. meanwhile, repuke women sit there smiling and say, 'yeah, what he said.'
