In Quincy, Illinois, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama joined volunteers and filled sandbags to hold back the Mississippi River. Republican presidential candidate John McCain issued a statement expressing sympathy for the flood victims.

30. CNN reported this morning that they are
problem we are having is that things are moving in slow mo

Faster than NOLA, but not fast enough

The Logistics chain should have been put on alert 12 hours into this, to be ready to roll the moment federal declarations were singed

I suspect they weren't

But Quincy is in Central Illinois (at least it is to me), just west of Springfield on the Illinois and Missouri border. They got a lot of rain the last couple of days up there. The Mississippi river is suppose to be flooding and it pretty much runs the length of the border between Illinois and Missouri. Where I am at there is no flooding, but that means very little. We are issolated from any rivers and it seems our area gets rain but never as much as the rest of the state. We are in a little dry pocket here, and when there is a drought, like there was last year, we were really dry.

edited to add: to give the devil his due, and I really hate too, mccain is not phyically able to do much to help out in the same way that Obama is. I could fill sand bags, so I won't down a guy who is older and worse disabled than I am to do it. With that said, he could show more concern than just to make a statement. When he challenged Obama to go to Iraq, then that points out that if he can make all those trips to Iraq then he could go to disaster areas in the US. And he wouldn't even have to wear an protective field jacket.

6. Too nice
On Monday Obama was speaking in Raleigh NC and a lady named Pamela introduced him. I was so touched when he adjusted the mike for her. I do notice little things like that.
Bravo Barack. :yourock:

31. There has been flooding in the SE part of the state
for a while now. I believe that bush refused to declare the counties affected a disaster area so they could not receive federal funding to help them out.

35. As the Rock R. crests in WI the water is headed toward the Quad cities
Along the way, places like Byron and Dixon are going to be flooding. The Rock has an extensive watershed some of which was in the area that averaged over 10 inches of rain last week.

16. I like this
http://www.khqa.com/news/news_story.aspx?id=147070
Obama says his campaign sent out an e-mail to all of his supporters to come help sandbag.

We know some of them have shown up in places, the senator hopes more come out.

I think Obama getting his volunteers to come out and help is a lot better than him doing a couple bags for a photo op.
I'm glad he did this; it really differentiates him from McCain.

27. Tha is very cool. For anyone who can go help, sandbagging is a really good thing to do.
Spent many hours as a highschooler sandbagging when our community flooded. It is a really good thing to do, don't need experience, just go ask, and do what they tell you.

Good for Obama to put out this call.

because he has no ground organization. If he had the troops, he could marshal them. The most he can do is say "sorry".

I gotta good feeling about November...McCain McCan't. McCain cain't do it. He just cain't.

Obama set an example of a humble person. Too bad Bill Gates was not there beside him to magnify the example or Warren Buffet.

24. McCain knows that the floodwaters will recede.
WHEN they will recede is not important to him. However, he's encouraging flood victims to make every effort to avoid drowning themselves.
