3rd BCT's Afghanistan deployment is extended
The 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, now in the 12th month of its deployment to Afghanistan, will be extended for up to 120 days, senior Defense officials said Wednesday.

...

The 3rd BCT’s extension comes after Defense Secretary Robert Gates’ recent visit to Afghanistan, after which Gates said he was open to commanders’ request for more troops.

Taliban attacks against coalition forces have risen sharply since Pakistan signed a truce with Islamic militants in the border area of Waziristan in September 2006.

...

...between 2005 and 2006, the number of attacks on coalition forces per year more than tripled, from 1,500 to 5,000.

Despite the surge in violence, the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower was called away from providing air support to coalition forces in Afghanistan to be part of the U.S. Navy presence off the Horn of Africa.

A second carrier, the USS John C. Stennis, has been dispatched to the U.S. Central Command theater of operations.

2. Yep
They're on their 12th month, about to go on their 13th, 14th, and 15th.

There must be a whole lot of divorces taking place within our military.

5. Bush supports wrecking the troops lives!
I wonder if he would still get the military vote?

8. He didn't get it in Nov.
and I doubt he got it in 2006. He wants us to give his plan a chance. Why not give his generals' views a chance for a change? Maybe keep them on deep-cover as a balance to Rummy's being in the back/corner/dark and apparently as involved as ever.

11. Bush is the second coming of the GROFAZ he is smarter than any
of his Generals...just like the first GROFAZ was. The troops are dying because Bush has a "VISION". I think it's more like FLASHBACKS!

they were due home then extended in Iraq, and we lost 9 more before they finally got home in December.

6. And They Complain About Us Ruining Morale???
We have a neighbor who was in the reserve...was recalled to active in 2002 and is now on his third tour. I asked him how much of the news from here that he heard while he was there and he laughed...saying all he heard was Rushbo on AFRTS and Faux Noise. He said the biggest morale or "ballbuster" was when his unit was recalled for its second tour and then it was extended 180 days cause there weren't enough replacement ready. Now he's back because he feels he owes it to the rest of his unit and his country...no matter how screwed up the civilians at the top are.

Damn this invasion is right!

Cheers...

7. Morale? I don't think this misAdministration knows how to spell it.
Our local guys (many live in my neighborhood - I can throw a rock and hit 3 Stryker Brigade houses) are VERY disheartened. They all feel the war isn't run right, wasn't necessary, and do NOT want to get redeployed - again. But my next-door neighbor said (confidentially) that his CO feels they'll get sent back within a few months.

FUCK GEORGE W. BUSH AND THE HORSE HE CAN'T RIDE IN ON.

Presented to Resident George W. Bush for Greatest Accomplishment in screwing our Military in Iraq.

10. Keep us posted on the 172nd Stryker Brigade
How do you think their spouses voted, assuming that the "boots" were too busy on the ground to look for a ballot in the post?

9. I had been following the Fort Wainwright folks
just after they got extended...some were throwing up when they got the extension news as they sat on the tarmac to head back to Alaska.

Nine more since the extension? Their families must be so devastated.

12. George Bush probably better hope he never runs into one of his Vets
after he joins public life. I'd wager even the Secret Service might take a small coffee break for a homeless Vet wanting to speak to his President.

16. Those signs would have been a great photo for a blog
w/o specifying address, just the signs and a "come see for yourself up around Fort Wainwright!"

Ted Stevens hasn't been much help. He can do better than phone cards.

Or can't he?

17. Uncle Ted has been lame-ducked.
At his age, a phone card probably is the best he can do!

The signs have all come down now, as none (except Scott) won in November. But we're working on at least turning Alaska purple instead of bright crimson!
