Disney 'Noose' Necklaces Raise Concerns
Disney 'Noose' Necklaces Raise Concerns

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Necklaces with golden noose-shaped pieces being sold to promote Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean line have some people fuming.

"It looks like a noose and I don't like it," a resident said after seeing the jewelry.

The necklace is being carried by some online retailers but cannot be found on Disney.com. However, it is part of Disney Couture's Pirates of the Caribbean line, WTSP-TV reported.

"I think that is ridiculous to let people see that and the kids today," a man said.

St. Petersburg's NAACP President Norman Brown said the necklace raised racial overtones for him.

24. You got a point there
I'm remembering a radio commercial a friend heard once for a jewelry shop owned by another friend's parents. It involved the phrase "tasteful 14 Karat gold Dale Earnhardt memorial pendant." He was laughing so hard he almost drove off the road.

I would think Norman Brown would have bigger things on his plate. But hey lets go for the easy targets that can't backfire on us Instead of Black on Black violence and the no-snitch culture.

"It looks like a noose and I don't like it" well don't buy it then jeez. Mission accomplished.

It gets worse apparently there are people selling gold chains with those crosses like the KKK uses.

Think of the children.

4. It's not a good idea to sell jewelry that looks like a killing device.
I can't think of any situation where this would be acceptable. So maybe it was part of their "pirates" promotion - still not ok.

18. I can think of several alternatives that say "pirate" better than a noose...
...a pirate (head to peg-leg)

a pirate (head only, with eye patch and tri-corner hat, dreds, etc.)

a chest of gold

a pirate ship

a doubloon

a pirate flag

a treasure map

a parrot

a capuchin monkey (wasn't there a capuchin monkey in those movies?)

crossed swords

I don't know what the hell they were thinking of by choosing a noose.

8. Crass, sure, tacky, by all means, offensive, to some, most certainly
But frankly Disney has the right to sell this, and if people don't like it, they don't have to buy it. Frankly, there are a lot of current fashion trends that I think are crass, tacky and offensive, but I don't believe they should be banned or anything.

This too will blow over, much like polyester disco suits and parachute pants.

That part I don't get.

Actually, I'm not sure I get any of the concern.

17. Someone (Brown) needs to do a little history research
Even presuming it's a noose (which it does look a bit like) Mr. Brown would be better served by knowing that the common punishment for piracy was death by hanging and apply the noose to that context.

However, given the "just a bunch of guys having fun and causing nautical hijinks" image Pirates went for, a noose still seems a bit of an odd choice for themed jewelry.

20. Not that common in the "Pirates of the Carribean" era
Most pirate's bodies were tarred and hung in chains or strapped to pylons at the entrance of harbors as warnings to others entering the area.

A noose is not exclusively linked to post Civil War lynchings and that's why this guy's "concern" is out of place given the context of the situation.

This is so trivial and benign it ain't even funny. Racial overtones? How dumb. It's a pirates of the Caribbean piece for god's sake. Some people crack me up!
