Once again, Jim Webb demonstrates what a real hero is.
Edited on Mon Mar-05-07 05:23 PM by 11 Bravo
Tweety just asked him to describe the action for which he received his medal (presumably the Navy Cross). Jim smiled sheepishly and said that wasn't what he was there to talk about, then deftly turned the conversation toward Iran, and a bill he introduced today to try and rein in our national embarrassment. For those who are interested, do a little research as to Jim's Navy Cross. The only reason it wasn't a Congressional Medal of Honor is that he survived his wounds. Otherwise, it would have been a posthumous CMH awarded to his widow along with a nicely folded flag.

1. I've an incredible good feeling about this straight shooter.
He may just be so genuine with his heart entirely in the right place. . .he is un-smearable. Yayyyyyyyy

9. LOL
It did not.

But your post makes me feel as though, after three compromised elections and near constant pummelling by the press for well over the past decade, we're all suffering from a touch of a more than a slight persecution complex.

Maybe we can work on that.

projection of the perpetuation of the victim schtick = self fulfilling prophesy perhaps

chin up

Webb took on * from the get go.

amen

18. He's been phenomenal
doing the work of about 3 old veteran Senators, IMO. Maybe more like 5 or 10. I know he's made ME a fan, and I wasn't particularly inclined in that direction.

2. here's his citation:
The Navy Cross is presented to James H. Webb, Jr., First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company D, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division (Reinforced), Fleet Marine Force, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 10 July 1969, while participating in a company-sized search and destroy operation deep in hostile territory, First Lieutenant Webb's platoon discovered a well-camouflaged bunker complex which appeared to be unoccupied. Deploying his men into defensive positions, First Lieutenant Webb was advancing to the first bunker when three enemy soldiers armed with hand grenades jumped out. Reacting instantly, he grabbed the closest man and, brandishing his .45 caliber pistol at the others, apprehended all three of the soldiers. Accompanied by one of his men, he then approached the second bunker and called for the enemy to surrender. When the hostile soldiers failed to answer him and threw a grenade which detonated dangerously close to him, First Lieutenant Webb detonated a claymore mine in the bunker aperture, accounting for two enemy casualties and disclosing the entrance to a tunnel. Despite the smoke and debris from the explosion and the possibility of enemy soldiers hiding in the tunnel, he then conducted a thorough search which yielded several items of equipment and numerous documents containing valuable intelligence data. Continuing the assault, he approached a third bunker and was preparing to fire into it when the enemy threw another grenade. Observing the grenade land dangerously close to his companion, First Lieutenant Webb simultaneously fired his weapon at the enemy, pushed the Marine away from the grenade, and shielded him from the explosion with his own body. Although sustaining painful fragmentation wounds from the explosion, he managed to throw a grenade into the aperture and completely destroy the remaining bunker. By his courage, aggressive leadership, and selfless devotion to duty, First Lieutenant Webb upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

10. Thanks for that, NoodleBoy.
I had read it before and remembered much of it, but didn't have the full text handy. I know what you mean about feeling "threatened by his balls". I've known Jim for about 20 years, and while he is by no means a threatening presence, there is a force and substance to the man that is palpable.

16. Now there is a man that will do his job
That is what his job consisted of at the time and it sounds as if he did it well. Them phony chicom grenades were a real pain in the ass. They seemed to be everywhere..

8. Thank God it wasn't the Congressional Medal of Honor...
because that would've meant a horrible loss for all of us. I, for one, am damn glad that Jim Webb was born fightin' and hasn't stopped since. :) I'm proud to say that I voted for him, and I think he's a great example of what a real Virginian (and a real American) should be. And now, for a bit of schoolgirl silliness that nevertheless totally conveys how I feel: I :loveya: Jim Webb.

13. Congressional Medal of Honor doesn't require the recipient to have been killed.

15. Oh, my mistake.
 I guess I was thinking about it from the standpoint of the OP's assertion that the only reason he didn't get one was because he survived his wounds...but of course if I'd been thinking, I'd have realized that there were several other instances in which that wasn't the case. :dunce: Duh. Thanks for setting me straight!

12. Best Vote I've Cast In 40+ Years
Most of my votes in those 4 decades have been for the lesser or 2 evils
(or a Disney character when I couldn't hold my nose tight enough) but
voting for Jim Webb felt 100% right.
I'll do it again if he runs for a second term or higher office.

14. There should be a whispering campaign....
...that builds to a shouting crescendo of voices to encourage this man to run for President. James Webb is the kind of man that can fix the last six years of endless nightmares.

They are not given lightly, that is one step down from a Congressional Medal of Honor

He is a hero, and he will continue to prove he is one in the Senate!!!
