Who is Ann Coulter, and where did she come from?
Yeah, yeah, we can say she crawled out from under a rock, or came from the bowels of Hell, but this is a serious question.

Our pundits tend to be former officeholders (Carter, Gore), staff from previous administrations (Podesta, Begala), commentators from established publications (Rich, Clift), members of think tanks (Sirota, Lakoff). In other words, people with a pedigree and intellectual heft.

The other side has a few from a background I can understand: former candidate Pat Buchanan and right-wing rag journalist(?) Fred Barnes, for example.

But Coulter? Hannity? O'Reilly? Rush? Malkin? What are their credentials? Did they come out of Hollywood casting because they yell and are entertaining? Why do they have shows, and my rightwing nutjob neighbor down the street doesn't?

Maybe I'm missing something and they have resumes that make their opinions worth listening to. But it sure seems to me that our pundits and commentators have the background to be taken more seriously than theirs.

(Uh-oh, did I just give myself away as being a pointy-headed academic?:P)

2. I don't know
Here is her background, from Wikipedia. How she got famous, I have no idea:

Ann Coulter was born to John Vincent and Nell Husbands Martin Coulter. After her birth in New York City, the family moved to New Canaan, Connecticut, where Coulter and her two older brothers were raised. She has described her family as "upper middle class" and has termed her attorney father a "union buster".<6><7>

As an undergraduate at Cornell, Coulter helped found The Cornell Review,<8> and was a member of the Delta Gamma national women's fraternity.<9> She graduated cum laude from Cornell in 1984, and received her law degree from the University of Michigan Law School, where she achieved membership in the Order of the Coif and was an editor of The Michigan Law Review.<10> At Michigan, Coulter founded a local chapter of the Federalist Society and was trained at the National Journalism Center.<11><12>

After law school, Coulter served as a law clerk for Pasco Bowman II of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit in Kansas City.<13> After a short time working in New York City in private practice, where she specialized in corporate law, Coulter left to work for the United States Senate Judiciary Committee after the Republicans took control of Congress in 1994. She handled crime and immigration issues for Senator Spencer Abraham of Michigan, and helped craft legislation that made it easier to deport aliens convicted of felonies. <14> She later became a litigator with the Center For Individual Rights.<15>

5. Well, there's your answer:
She was probably a piss-poor lawyer, so she had to go shilling for the freepers in order to keep food on the table (not that she eats any of it....)

10. I think she got her early prominence working against Clinton in the Paula Jones case?
I could be wrong, but I believe she was involved in the attempts to bring down Clinton through the legal system - her first book was on Clinton, and it's clear she's still kind of after him.

3. Coulter is not the real name
I heard that once but they did not give her born name. It would be nice so you could do a search. I know it is terrible to say but I really truly believe coulter had an operation to transform into a woman. Or maybe coulter did not have the operation at all and that's why coulter can't keep a man. If anybody finds out the real name, please post it.

23. Hannity was a house painter who spent hours calling talk radio in Atlanta
primarily over the Ollie North testimoney and trial. The GM of the radio station liked how Hannity handled himself and gave him a job.

The Fox News chief gave Hannity a show when the network started and the rest is history. Drudge had a show on Fox News too but it was so bad that they cancelled it.

Very upper class, lots of corporate CEO's make their homes there. I'm sure that's where Ann developed her taste for Chardonney and all things elitist.

24. She was an "elf" in Scaife's Arkansas project. Her books were bulk bought
to establish her as a "best selling author" she then got on TV and made an ass of herself (or got in good digs depending on your side) and now every time she writes a book ;-) they let he back on and she makes some outrageous statement and everyone talks about it for a week or so.

No one really takes her seriously except the wingnuts.

35. More like she ate all the brown acid.
Seriously...focus on her eyes...she's got that "lights on, nobody's home" deranged look. I think her eyes provide a window to the back of her skull.

"She's Gone"*

Rat in a drain ditch,
Caught on a limb,
You know better
But I know her.
Like I told you,
What I said,
Steal your face
Right off your head.

Now she's gone, gone,
Lord she's gone, she's gone.
Like a steam locomotive,
Rollin' down the track
She's gone, gone,
Nothing's gonna bring her back.
She's gone.

* Lyric's corrected for Ann....

27. Coulter considered running for Congress
In 1999 and 2000, Coulter considered running for Congress from Connecticut on the Libertarian Party ticket to serve as a spoiler in order to throw the seat to the Democratic candidate and see that Republican Congressman Christopher Shays failed to gain re-election, as a punishment for Shays's voting against the impeachment of President Bill Clinton. The leadership of the Libertarian Party of Connecticut, after meeting with Coulter, declined to endorse her. As a result, her self-described "total sham, media-intensive, third-party Jesse Ventura campaign" did not take place.<16><54>

29. Ann helped orchestrate the 'elves' in the impeachment. She
worked with Starr, Starr's lawyers, and Isikoff, Drudge, and Lucianne and got orders from her superior's in the batallions at war with Clinton. The elves worked around the law to get Clinton. They had an important coup on the day the FBI was holding Monica in a hotel room until after 5 - which caused a document to be sent by unknowing lawyers that kind of cinched the case for the lie. She was on all the talk politics shows claiming to be a Constitutional lawyer expert- her cause was the impeachement of Clinton. The memory is gettng fuzzy - the story is in The Hunting Of The President by Joe Conason and Gene Lyons. Never refuted.

She said wild things back then, but not as wild as now. I would say she tried to be more professional back then. Concurrently with the impeachment - she was well known for her pubic length skirts and crossed legs - especially under glass table tops on tv programs. She was a right wing darling, a moral Republican. Oh yes, she would sometimes joke about her dates - on air.

That's my contribution for 'who is ...'.

and for Cerridwen's background on the Paula Jones case. The picture I'm getting is that she paid her dues during the Clinton lynching, get some time on the tube, loved it so much she turned into an attention whore. I suggest she shave her head next.

30. A little background and a link for more
Coulter’s unorthodox approach to law and politics brought her to national attention when she advised the legal team helping Paula Jones to sue Bill Clinton. Coulter has admitted to leaking salacious details of Jones’ testimony to the press in hopes of scuttling a settlement. The reason, as she eventually explained: "We were terrified that Jones would settle. It was contrary to our purpose of bringing down the President."

Publicly, Coulter stood by Jones, whom she called “the good Christian girl,” at least until the case was resolved. After that, Coulter turned around and decried Jones as “trailer park trash.” Meanwhile, Coulter had published her vindictive first book, High Crimes and Misdemeanors: The Case Against Bill Clinton, portions of which she has been accused of plagiarizing from the work of Michael Chapman, a man with whom she had formerly worked but later claimed never to have met. Classy. link to blog

Not that it's news to anyone here, but she seems to have some issues with ethics. She leaked testimony? Yeah, I guess it's legal depending on circumstances. Beyond that...
