Navy dredging bottom for recruits?
Does anybody have anything on what is going on at Great Lakes Naval Training center?

Navy sailors stole cab, then torched it near base, cops say

Two sailors ended a Memorial Day visit to Chicago by stealing, then torching the cab returning them to Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Lake County authorities said Tuesday.

After they were arrested, the sailors claimed they were drunk when they allegedly forced the driver to turn over his cab, police said.

Charged were Terry E. Gappa, 20, of Plymouth, Mass., and Aaron L. Couch, 21, of Monroe, La., both stationed at the Great Lakes facility near North Chicago, Lake County officials said. Both were released on $50,000 recognizance bonds that required no cash deposit, officials said.

As they neared the base, they threatened to kill the driver unless he let them take over the taxi, said Kevin Parker, Lake County sheriff's police deputy chief. Gappa allegedly took the wheel and drove, including a stop to buy beer. The cabbie eventually jumped out.

2. The Navy has been recruiting under lesser standards for a long time.
I suspect it's getting worse since Shrub because few people want to endure military life sith him as their CIF. My son was in the Navy for 16 years. He got out 8 years ago because the Navy had changed so much, and not for the better! I know I tried to talk him into staying for that last 4 years to get his pension. I said, "If you lasted 16 years, can't you do the last four?" He said no. He still has a lot of respect to the Navy, but mostly the commanders...the E1's through E4's just haven't been up to snuff for a long time.
