The Ottawa-based International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group (CLMG) has set up an action-research clearinghouse on border controls and watch lists to investigate and document cases related to the creation of no-fly lists and other watch lists that impact on civil liberties, right to privacy and mobility rights for all travelers, including peace activists.

CLMG would like to hear from anyone who has had trouble entering Canada because of arrests for political protests in the United States. Their website, www.travelwatchlist.ca, will be active on June 18, 2008 and will have a toll-free number.

Watch list and border controls

This research project led by the International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group (ICLMG) and its partners¸ aims to document the nature of the incidents and the number of travellers who believe they have been mistakenly or unfairly targeted by government watch lists on both sides of the border.

The purpose of the research is to investigate and generate better public understanding of the practices, programs and systems used to screen travellers at Canadian airports and at the Canada-U.S. border crossings in order to assess the scope and depth of their concrete impacts on civil liberties, privacy rights and mobility rights.

We need to know more in order to inform our work promoting and defending civil liberties and human rights for all.

Do you suspect that your name is on a no-fly list or another government watch list?
Are you always stopped, searched and interrogated when you attempt to cross the border although you’ve never been charged or convicted of any crime?
Do you believe you have been mistakenly or unfairly targeted?
Do you suspect ethnic or religious profiling?
Do you no longer travel for fear of being singled out?
