Brigitte Bardot fined for anti-Muslim remarks regarding inhumane ritual slaughter of animals

PARIS (AFP) — France's 1960s screen icon Brigitte Bardot received a 15,000-euro (23,000 dollar) fine on Tuesday for inciting hatred against Muslims.

In December 2006, the film star-turned-animal rights activist wrote a letter to France's then interior minister, current President Nicolas Sarkozy, arguing that Muslims should stun animals before slaughtering them during the Aid al-Kabir holiday.

She outraged anti-racist groups by saying: "I've had enough of being led by the nose by this whole population which is destroying us, (and) destroying our country by imposing their ways."

Bardot, now 73 and suffering from arthritis, was absent from Tuesday's court hearing in Paris. She wrote to the court saying: "I'm sickened by how (these organisations) are harassing me."

She added: "I will not shut up until stunning is carried out" on animals before their ritual slaughter.

Bardot already has four convictions on similar charges. In 2004 she was fined 5,000 euros for inciting racial hatred in her book "Un Cri Dans le Silence" (A Cry in the Silence).

France is home to Europe's largest Muslim community, estimated at five million people.

1. While I agree that fear-mongering about "them furriners" is stupid, so is
subjecting that stupidity to government-sanctioned penalties. Any attempt at regulating speech will merely reflect the biases of those in power.

2. I think that she could approach the subject
with more tact, but then she is an actress, not a politician.

4. No doubt that her method of addressing the subject has been way too inflammatory.
The issue of Europe's changing demographics is a complex one with no easy answers. On one hand you have discrimination and xenophobia among the "native" population, while on the other hand you have disaffection and alienation (prime conditions for extremist recruiting) among immigrants and their kids. And hysterical screams of "Eurabia!" do nothing to clarify or help the situation.

5. She's worn that same expression
in every photo I've seen of her about this trial. She always looks like she just sucked down a bitter lemon.

I used to think she was a great animal rights activist. Eventhough, I'm a meat eater, I respected her for that. Now I'm not so sure she's not using the AR stuf to stir up anti-imigration bullshit. That's a very combustable combo.

6. Yes I think it is a bad combination
for her to do the animal rights along with the Xenophobia.
And from her remarks, she seems fairly clueless about how she comes off. The world is changing, as it always has. France will change too.

7. Anyone who eats factory-farmed meat
can STFU about traditional slaughtering practices, IMO.
