3. so is Hawaii excited about Obama? I know little about Hawaii politics
except I have a friend of a family member who grew up there and moved back. She gave me some sense of the economic disparities there and the independence movement that the mainland has no idea exists.

4. Hawaii is excited about Obama.
Local son status is especially powerful here. The economic disparity has lessened to some extent with the buildup of west-central Oahu. The concurrent issues that dominate local politics are the heavily debated planned construction of a $4 billion dollar train from Kapolei to Honolulu and further housing anxieties in general. Hawaii is also very worried about whether or not a growing population on the islands is sustainable given the increasing cost of shipping to the Islands and the weakness of the Mainland economy vis a vis decreased tourism. Airfare is a big issue. However, it should be noted that voter turnout historically sucks in Hawaii.
