McCain was against the everglades before he was for them...
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Republican John McCain was confronted Thursday about why he opposed an Everglades restoration measure that had broad support from Florida officials, including Republican Gov. Charlie Crist and GOP Sen. Mel Martinez.

McCain also drew criticism from Democratic rival Barack Obama for opposing another Florida priority, a national hurricane insurance fund.

Both issues are meaningful to Florida, a hotly contested state in presidential races because of its rich trove of electoral votes. In both instances, McCain sided against Florida officials and with President Bush, while Obama went the other way.

1. And just as soon as he finishes the 100 year war, McCain will save the Everglades

2. McCain can't serve two masters
I read the headlines in the Orlando Sentinel today. So McCain will officially support NASA and the Everglades? Huh? This is the type of disjointed thinking that is going thru this man's head.

Okay, the basic point is that environmental issues don't mix with the NASA issue, as least since NASA was responsible for the extinction of the Dusky Seaside Sparrow.

Fact: While McCain was busy dropping bombs on the swamps and wetlands of Vietnam, to eliminate those pesky Viet Cong guerrillas, NASA was busy destroying the swamps and wetlands near the Merritt Island nature refuge so it could curtail the number of those pesky Florida mosquitos. This was done over the express objections of environmentalist at the time, who feared that such actions would be detrimental to the rare Dusky Seaside Sparrow and other native species which would lose their habitat. This is exactly what happened. Merritt Island's dusky seaside sparrow became a casualty when the cord-grass habitat was flooded out for mosquito control.
The dusky seaside sparrow was declared extinct in December, 1990.

A cousin species, the Cape Sable seaside sparrow, is another potential victim of development, wetlands destruction and government. Do you think McCain really cares about the little tweety birds?

Roughly one square mile of Florida wetlands, scrub and forest vanishes under roofs, pavement and other development every three days.

Someone tell McCain that he can't serve two masters. And you can't fool the real Floridians who have witness the nonstop, merciless destruction of our native species over the decades.

4. The california ecology is getting plowed under for the sake
Of little metal and plastic stakes, holding up the newborn grape vines.

I drove through the road called "Jago Bay" and two years ago, on my first trip through it, around me was the primal song of the redwoods, cottonwoods and pines. There were birds in the air and the feel of life in all its holy abundance and variety.

Today on the same trip, much of the hillside has been levelled. For miles and miles, all that one can see are the vintners' trellises and their monocrop of grape. The birds are gone, and everything four legged or two legged that depends on wilderness. All done in the name of progress. So some can make a profit on the wine.

There is no habitat in a vineyard for the coyotes, or the fox or deer, or raccoon, or salamander or snake. Even the birds have left.
